i just read war and peace while on vacation. excellent book, i highly recommend it! don't let the books reputation scare you off...yeah, it's huge. but it's good--unlike, say james joyce's ulysses for example.

On the other hand, I just started the book "A People's History of The United States. 1492-present" by Howard Zinn. Interesting stuff thus far.

yeah, i really did read it...read over 3k pages total on that trip. a new bio of lincoln, war and peace, history of scotland, and the rebels of ireland by rutherferd...i enjoy his stuff, so i bought up all his others. now, i just need another vacation so i can get caught up on those! and this book i just got on robespierre....

war and peace was better than anna karenina, that's for sure. i also have several by dostoevsky...the idiot, crime and punishment, and the brothers karamazov--i like the brothers best.

I guess I really need to force myself into War and Peace then....at least give it a fair shake.

i didn't have any trouble getting into it, it is really good. i can't stand trying to read a book that you really have to force yourself to read. but i've found that if i put it up, and try later, than maybe i'm in a different mood because it's usually easier the second time...except of course for that rotten bit of wasted tree and ink called ulysses..

LOL.....maybe I will be in the mood after I finish this Peoples History of the United States book....thats a pretty good segway into a Russian Lit classic, right??

i'm currently reading a trilogy by bernard cornwell (sharpe series author), i've read two of the grail books, now to start excalibur. i enjoy his books, you ought to try them if you like historical fiction...

sure did. EXCELLENT! also, if you enjoy u.s. history, i highly recommend ron chernows bio of alexander hamilton. his excellency george washington is another. also founding brothers.

Always thought that I would like to have an account with Youbet, but after listening to some of you guys, I think I'm glad I'm still physically going to the track to do my gambling. One thing that seems to help me some in controlling my gambling is playing in contests. No money involved and I still get to enjoy handicapping and competing.

If you decide to read some books, two that I read recently that were good were The Life of Pi and The Kite Runner. Both about young boys. One was shipwrecked with a Bengal Tiger and the story is about his struggle to keep the Tiger from making a meal of him. The other was about a boy in Afghanistan who betrays his best childhood friend and then flees Afghanistan with his family after the takeover by the Taliban. It's about what he does for redemption.

The way I see it is you have 2 choices right now.

You could call a addiction buddy , like P. Val and share your troubles till you fall asleep.

Or you can make that call to CASH CALL and be broke for the next 10 years.

I've got a gazillion books I haven't read that are collecting dust. This summer I tried to get through Sartre's "The Age of Reason" which I bought in... 1989, I believe. Oy. Freakin' 1940's French novels...

alexandre dumas if you're into swashbuckling. i like the count of monte cristo.

balzac, he's good. then there's hugo, his les mis is spectacular!

kev, if you like history, you gotta read cornwell. trust me. his 'archer' trilogy is outstanding, set during the hundred years war. and now he's come out with some based on saxon england, two books of the three out so far. it's during the times of alfred the great and the vikings...
rutherferd is good if you like british history. i've read london, the princes of ireland, the rebels of ireland...and have the new forest and sarum to read.

i sailed thru 1776 in no time, it was really good.

also have a book that came out several years ago..it's about jefferson, hamilton, and burr. i'll have to look for the authors name when i get home, can't remember it off-hand.
