Really? Not to get all Betsy on people, but they rushed him into the Jim Dandy and Travers off a statebred allowance win and he ran admirably. Should they have put him in the Classic? This was the closest thing he's gotten to class relief since his N1X, he proved his mettle and there's plenty of time to get him some graded stakes wins. This was only his sixth start.

They have plenty of options now but given the Bromans are so involved in NY breeding this spot made sense. You're not going to get a much easier spot for 200k. They can think about the Clark or Cigar Mile and have a relatively fresh horse for Gulfstream and what should be a DISASTROUS handicap division next year if Lookin at Lucky is retired.

They scratched him out of the Pennsylvania Derby and said they were pointing to the Kelso, but then scratched him out of that. Obviously, I understand from an owner's perspective why you'd want to take the easy way out and run in this spot, but from my bankroll's perspective, it's annoying.

I'd be on your side if they hadn't already taken some (relatively) big leaps with the horse this year.

He had a hoof infection that kept affecting their preparation, plans and placement. Easy way out wasn't the issue. Kimmel thinks very highly of him and would loved to have been able to run in the bigger open spots. Especially after the frustrating 'lost all chance' first turn fiasco in the Travers.

Both of those spots would have been drops in class as well - the Kelso would have been perfect. Do the Bromans really need the $120K?

It's really amazing how badly owners and trainers spot their horses. Maybe it's easier to see when you're an outsider, but it perplexes me.

That's good to know - thanks. They never said anything about it after they said they were rerouting to the Kelso, though.

What happened in the Straight Story race? Why did Lezcano do this to my horse? He went after him hard. I thought SS ran well. The 4 got the trip of the century and by no means rolled home. SS beats him 9/10 times, today being the 1 where the trip ruins it.

Oh, you mean it's only OK when Straight Story gets to gallop on the lead? God forbid he ever gets any pressure, then that's totally mad unfairs! He got beaten, fair and square, Prado could've had him any time he wanted in the stretch.

Unbelievable, a frontrunner finally gets pressured into defeat in a NYRA turf race and someone feels the need to bitch because their 6-5 shot lost.

That was really odd. I can't wait to bet Midnight Billy back off that effort. He tired late as you would expect, but he was still in contention late.

SS ran really well. I'd like to see them target the Manhattan next year.

If Midnight Billy had shown even an ounce of early speed in any of his previous 12 races it wouldn't have been so curious. But he hadn't, and I can't imagine what Lezcano was thinking, other than trying to get Straight Story beaten.

SS UN was HUGE. He did not have the lead and he ran a bang up race. Things rarley go his way, and he is not some plodder. When things go his way, HE WINS. Colonial last year? One could argue he was best in both of those races.
