For anyone who is so inclined... petition to ask HIlton to stop serving shark fin soup in their Far East restaurants (their Dept. of Corporate Responsibility is currently rewiewing the issue).

Thanks for the link to the petition!
The east coast is (finally) catching up with the ban. Unfortunately VA (aka dumbest state evah) introduced a bill last year banning the sale and possession of shark fin, but it never made it out of committee. I wrote the sponsor of that bill to see if he would reintroduce the bill and never heard back from him... Maryland has an active bill for this legislative section and a search of other states can be performed here if anyone is interested in writing in their support: http://www.bornfreeusa.org/b4_legislation.php |
I will be contacting Hilton Honors as well....

great book!! |
What not to eat
Great book, indeed. The Russian, Nabokov, knew more about America than the average American.
"Lo, the poor Indian." "Our glass lake." And the single best anagram in all of literature, Vivian Darkbloom, a character in the novel, is an anagram of Vladimir Nabokov. By the way, who eats killer whales anyway? |

("...Lolita is approximately 21 feet long and 7,000 pounds. Her tank is 20 feet deep at the deepest point and a mere 12 feet deep around the edges. The pool is only 35 feet wide."). I mean there are so many layers to the cruelty here it is despicable. Do you have any idea - this retirement plan which is posted and in such detail... is anyone listening? I'll do what i'm sure you have done and call / email every single contact on there but man... utterly heartbreaking. * * * On a lighter note... love is blind. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ocks-wild.html |

Who does their pr? Same geniuses as racing? The answer stares them in the face. This could be the great event of the year. They announce they will be closing down, have a nationwide contest... you know like "best improvement idea" or something and get it out there in the schools... (give the winner a trip for the reopening)... Annonce that they will take the lead, they will set Lolita free, start marketing the route (aka the space shuttle Endeavours trek through LA), selling I don't know banners etc. for a minimum $10. donation... I have a friend who, every time we get together, we try to come up with stuff. My last idea was since McDonalds now lists their calories, etc. (I don't eat that crap, for the record!) they should have shiny new whatever the things are called that tell you what you've ordered and the amount... that info should show up there so it's right in front of you. She disagreed, saying no it will make people stop eating it. No it won't! If you're in a drive thru and that's what you want you WILL order it. At most maybe change the fries from large to medium or something, right? But if that is what you're there for no it won't. BUT it will make them look like the first fast food company to really care lol. It it marketing. Same thing here. This goes on and on and on and so change it, set the poor thing free BUT do it with pizzazz... rasie and spend money, improve the whole place, make it the premiere attractoin AND the one that is kind and beneficial for sea creatures. I mean there has got to be a way. It's frustrating and it's like the Wise Dan thread all over again. Why is marketing so difficult for some to understand? Set her free and make it a huge national event. This would work. Everyone benefits. (THis of course because obviously they lack souls and heart and need to have some profit from doing what is right). Sighty too bad we can't go down there ourselves and do it huh? :) |
not sure if anyone saw the article out a few days ago about some supermarkets in the u.k. finding horse meat in their 'beef' products...just saw this about burger king:
http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2...t-scandal?lite LONDON -- Burger King said on Thursday it had stopped using one of the firms caught up in the scandal of supplying British grocers with hamburger that contained horse meat. The British food industry has been rocked by the revelation last week that retailers including market leader Tesco and smaller chains Aldi, Lidl and Iceland had sold beef products that contained horse meat. Food safety experts say horse meat poses no added health risks to consumers, but the discovery has raised concerns about the food supply chain and the ability to trace meat ingredients. The discovery of horse meat could be both embarrassing and damaging for the retailers involved. The mass-selling Sun newspaper carried the Burger King announcement on its front page Thursday with the headline "Shergar King," in reference to a famous racehorse that was kidnapped and never seen again. |

The United States will support proposals at CoP16 to restrict unsustainable levels of international trade on manta rays and five shark species--porbeagle, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead, smooth hammerhead, and oceanic whitetip. Populations of the five shark species are declining because of demand for fins for food products such as soup and medicine, while manta rays are being overharvested to meet demand for their gill plates. |
Thought this thread was going to be about Indian Food:

I was surprised at the mention of manta rays needing protection, so i looked up stories to explain the demand. Yet another'tonic' demand (the gill plates are what they want) located in asia, one with no scientific basis, no medicinal qualities-reminds me of the demand for rhino horn.

If anyone is interested, this is on the Discovery Channel tonight and also discusses what the WWF is doing to help stop wildlife crime, you can also read more here: http://wwf.panda.org/ : Extreme Smuggling: Animals - airing 1/28 at 8:00PM ET/PT In this episode, enter the cruel and clandestine world of illegal wildlife trafficking, where millions of people pay big bucks for rare and exotic animals. Six out of every ten households in the United States owns a pet, but there is a dark side to the exotic pet trade: endangerment and extinction of species, irresponsible ownership and the spread of animal-borne diseases. The trafficking and smuggling of exotic and endangered wildlife is a booming black market business estimated to reel in an excess of ten billion dollars annually. Traffickers go to extremes from carrying live animals under their clothes to concealing millions of dollar's worth of ivory in hidden panels inside shipping containers. Watch undercover surveillance of the largest seizure of animals in American history, a restaurant raid in Cambodia and footage of shocking airport confiscations. |

Maybe should have posted this on a new thread but it sort of fits here.
If you've read the Texas Chili cookoff this one is similar with a different twist. This is really a LMAO :D:D:D Firehouse Salsa Cook-off! Firehouse Salsa Cook-off *If you can read this whole story without laughing, then there's no hope for you. I was crying by the end. This is an actual account as relayed to paramedics at a salsa cook-off at Eng. 50's house. Note: Please take time to read this slowly. If you pay attention to the first two judges, the reaction of the third judge is even better. For those of you who have lived in Chicago , you know how true this is. They actually have a Salsa Cook-off about the time Halloween comes around. It takes up a major portion of a parking lot at the firehouse . Judge #3 was an inexperienced Salsa taster named Ed Konecki, who was recently assigned after being promoted to Engineer. Ed Konecki: "Recently, I was honored to be selected as a judge at a salsa cook-off.. The original person layed-up at the last moment and I happened to be standing there at the judge's table, asking for directions to 57th and Loomis, when the call came in. I was assured by the other two judges (Chris Quinn and Lee McCleod) that the salsa wouldn't be all that spicy; and, besides, they told me I could have free Paczki during the tasting, so I accepted and became Judge #3." *Here are the scorecard notes from the event: ** *SALSA # 1 - MIKE'S MANIAC MONSTER SALSA * Lee McCleod-- A little too heavy on the tomato. Amusing kick. Chris Quinn -- Nice, smooth tomato flavor. Very mild. Ed Konecki -- Holy crap, what the hell is this stuff? You could remove dried paint from your driveway. Took me two beers to put the flames out. I hope that's the worst one. These firemen are crazy. *SALSA # 2 - EL RANCHO'S AFTERBURNER SALSA * Lee McCleod-- Smoky, with a hint of cilantro. Slight jalapeno tang. Chris Quinn -- Exciting cilantro flavor, needs more peppers to be taken seriously. Ed Konecki -- Keep this out of the reach of children. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to taste besides pain. I had to wave off two people who wanted to give me the Heimlich maneuver. They had to rush in more beer when they saw the look on my face. *SALSA # 3 - EDUARDO'S FAMOUS BURN DOWN THE BARN SALSA * Lee McCleod-- Excellent firehouse salsa. Great kick. Chris Quinn -- A bit salty, good use of peppers. Ed Konecki -- Call the EPA. I've located a uranium spill. My nose feels like I have been snorting Drano. Everyone knows the routine by now. Get me more beer before I ignite. Zajac (the Beer Maid) pounded me on the back, now my backbone is in the front part of my chest. I'm getting sh*t-faced from all of the beer. *SALSA # 4=2 0- BUBBA'S BLACK MAGIC * Lee McCleod-- Black bean salsa with almost no spice. Disappointing. Chris Quinn -- Hint of lime in the black beans. Good topping for fish or other mild foods, not much of a salsa. Ed Konecki -- I felt something scraping across my tongue, but was unable to taste it. Is it possible to burn out taste buds? Zajac, the beer maid, was standing behind me with fresh refills. This very ugly man is starting to look HOT ... Just like this nuclear waste I'm eating! Is chili an aphrodisiac? *SALSA # 5 - LISA'S LEGAL LIP REMOVER * Lee McCleod -- Tangy, strong salsa. Habanero peppers freshly ground, adding considerable kick. Very impressive. Chris Quinn -- Salsa using Habaneros, could use less tomato. Must admit the Habanero peppers make a strong statement. Ed Konecki-- My ears are ringing, sweat is pouring off my forehead and I can no longer focus my eyes. I farted, and four people behind me needed paramedics. The contestant seemed offended when I told her that her salsa had given me brain damage. Zajac saved my tongue from bleeding by pouring beer directly on it from the pitcher. I wonder if I'm burning my lips off.. It really ticks me off that the other judges asked me to stop screaming. Screw them.. *SALSA # 6 - VARGA'S VERY GARDEN VARIETY * Lee McCleod -- Thin yet bold variety salsa. Good balance of spices and peppers. Chris Quinn -- The best yet. Aggressive use of peppers, onions, garlic. Superb. Ed Konecki -- My intestines are now a straight pipe filled with gaseous, sulfuric flames. I crapped on myself when I farted, and I'm worried it will eat through the chair. No one seems inclined to stand behind me except that Zajac. Can't feel my lips anymore. I need to wipe my butt with a snow cone. *SALSA # 7 - SUSAN'S SCREAMING SENSATION SALSA * Lee McCleod -- A mediocre salsa with too much reliance on canned peppers. Chris Quinn -- Ho hum, tastes as if the chef literally threw in a can of peppers at the last moment. **I should take note that I am worried about Ed Konecki. He appears to be in a bit of distress as he is cursing uncontrollably. Ed Konecki -- You could put a grenade in my mouth, pull the pin, and I wouldn't feel a thing. I've lost sight in one eye, and the world sounds like it is made of rushing water. My shirt is covered with salsa, which slid unnoticed out of my mouth. My pants are full of lava to match my shirt. At least during the autopsy, they'll know what killed me. I've decided to stop breathing. It's too painful. Screw it; I'm not getting any oxygen anyway. If I need air, I'll just suck it in through the 4-inch hole in my stomach.. *SALSA # 8 - BIG TOM'S TOENAIL CURLING SALSA * Lee McCleod -- The perfect ending, this is a nice blend salsa. Not too bold but spicy enough to declare its existence. Chris Quinn -- This final entry is a good, balanced salsa. Neither mild nor hot. Sorry to see that most of it was lost when Judge #3 farted, passed out, fell over and pulled the salsa bowl down on top of himself. Not sure if he's going to make it. Poor fella, wonder how he'd have reacted to really hot salsa? Ed Konecki -- No report. |

What not to wear:
Hey I know, let's skin various animals alive for a pair of shoes. (On Beyonce...) http://fashion.telegraph.co.uk/colum...nkenshoes.html These custom-made kicks come with a high price - and it`s paid by the various animals who were beaten and skinned alive or cruelly farmed and killed. Although most people aren`t as familiar with the types of animals (snakes, stingrays, crocodiles, and ostriches) killed for this single pair of sneakers, these animals are highly sensitive living beings who try hard to avoid capture and suffer enormously when trapped, netted, speared, and skinned alive," - PETA (there are times when they get it right) |
