Lookin At Lucky, Conveyance Work at Churchill
By Blood-Horse Staff Lookin At Lucky and Conveyance, two contenders for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) trained by Bob Baffert, worked at Churchill Downs April 15. Lookin At Lucky was first out of the barn and was the first horse to hit the track following the mid-session break for track maintenance. He breezed an easy five furlongs under exercise rider Dana Barnes in 1:01.20. Barnes was also aboard Conveyance as the Southwest (gr. III) winner and Sunland Derby (gr. III) runner-up went five furlongs in 1:00.60. Lookin At Lucky -- Karl Watson, Mike Pegram and Paul Weitman’s reigning 2-year-old champion and Rebel Stakes (gr. II) winner – covered the distance in fractional times of :12.60, :25.20, :37.40 and :49.6 over a fast track. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.60. Zabeel Racing International’s Conveyance turned in fractional times of :13.60, :37.40 and :49 in his five-furlong move and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.60. "I just wanted to get over the track and see where they stand – just get a little easy five-eighths into both of them," Baffert said in a statement from Churchill Downs. "It seemed like they went over it nice." |
Jackson Bend in Fast Workout at Churchill
By Blood-Horse Staff Jackson Bend, runner-up to Kentucky Derby favorite Eskendereya in both the Fountain of Youth (gr. II) and Wood Memorial (gr. I) stakes, displayed a fondness for Churchill Downs as the Nick Zito trainee worked a fast four furlongs April 15 in :47.40. He is owned by Jacks or Better Farm and Robert LaPenta. The work over fast footing under exercise rider Carlos Correa ranked third among 30 at the distance. The son of Hear No Evil --Sexy Stockings, by Tabasco Cat, worked in company with stablemate Thomas Got Even and covered the half-mile in fractions of :11.60, :23.60,:35.40 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.20. Thomas Got Even covered the distance in an identical time. "I love it," said Zito of the move, the first by Jackson Bend since his arrival at Churchill Downs, in a statement released from Churchill Downs. "If he could actually do that next week, maybe Thursday or Friday, I’d be happy. Obviously he’s not a big horse and, more importantly, he’s just as good as can be and we’re happy about all that." Jackson Bend has never run worse than second in nine career races, including five victories. He has earned $707,820. |
I note that Baffert is going blinkers off with Lookin at Lucky. What to make of that decision?

Calling a champion a plug sort of sums up your game.

Last time out, when things didn't exactly go his way, the great Setsuko blew by him in the stretch. A lot has to go right for this horse to win the Derby. And, his quota of lifetime good trips is probably already exhausted. |
