On what planet is Brendan Shanahan not a Hall of Famer, but Adam Oates, Pavel Bure, Joe Sakic, and Mats Sundin are? Is it because he works for the NHL now? Don't get me wrong, those guys were all great ones, but aside from Sakic, not one of them was clearly a superior overall player to Shanahan.

Shanny not being elected to the HOF is almost as mind boggling and embarrassing as some of his rulings this past playoff season.

Also, as a Detroit Red Wings fan, I will forever be thankful for the role Shanahan played in beating the pee out of many Colorado Avalanche in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

paulo537 06-26-2012 03:28 PM

This is hard to believe. I'm pretty sure Shanahan had 600+ goals; something like 15th all time. Hard to believe.

slotdirt 06-26-2012 03:31 PM

Only player in NHL history with 600 goals and 2,000 PIM. Gordie Howe would appreciate both stats.

Bigsmc 06-26-2012 03:42 PM

What about this guy? (stats from Wiki, don't shoot the messenger if they are wrong)

5th most games played in NHL history with 1639.
14th most goals scored in NHL history with 640.
Tied with Denis Savard for 27th in league history with 1,338 points.
Holds the record for most NHL career power-play goals with 274.

Dave Andreychuck

slotdirt 06-26-2012 03:54 PM

Pretty sure Dave Andreychuck played about 402 seasons.

Andreychuck was a very good player for a long time..........Shanahan and Roenick who also didn't get in were supperior players IMO.

slotdirt 06-26-2012 04:26 PM

Think of how good Roenick could have been if his brain wasn't mush for like 65 percent of his career? Those early 90's Hawks teams were pretty awesome.

How many did Shanahan play?

Not a knock, Andreychuck just played freaking forever (or so it seemed). Very Gary Roberts-like.

I hope you're not making an argument that Andreychuck was a better player than Shanahan. Andreychuck needed over 100 more games to net 16 fewer goals. I'm not sure they're even comparable.

pgiaco 06-27-2012 04:36 PM

I'm having a hard time seeing Mats Sundin in the HOF...I guess he did turn Alexei Ponikarovsky into a 25 goal scorer, but really? :zz:

I don't argue, I leave that to the the regulars in the Political threads. I was asking a question, because it seemed to me they both played forever. Just throwing another name out that may compare to the guys that got in.

slotdirt 06-28-2012 08:06 AM

Andreychuck should probably get in someday, but the one spot where I think he fails is that he was never really one of the best players on the ice in any given season. I think that one can say that for Sundin, 100 percent for Bure when he was healthy, and definitely Sakic.

Shanahan had 12 different seasons with 30+ goals and 19 (!!!!) seasons with 20+ goals. Pretty incredible longevity.

ding ding.... i said he was left off the ballot for how pussified he's making hockey these days.
not sure why people are getting their panties in a bunch, they guy will get in. I have no problem with this years class....if i had to cull one out it would be Sundin

i would be willing to help him pack. The guy was a defensive liability, and his points, even for a defensemen, didn't reflect his overall game, ala 2 years ago when Jeff Shultz led the world in +/-.

trading picks/players for rights to players you have no intention of signing is like found money IMO... and 5M+ per for that guy is a HUGE over payment, we already have one of those anyways... Mike Green
