Hilarious. Thank you for my first out-loud laugh of the morning (as opposed to the ones that are only in my head).

Hey Lori it's in the 40's today here in Chicago and with 2 weeks of sub zero weather it feels like 60. Still would rather be celebrating Fat Tuesday on your balcony than here. My God Fort Lauderdale is a nice place.

It is hot in West Palm Beach right now. It is probably in the 80s. I want to go lay out in the sun and bake!

I guess I shouldn't have posted that and had some consideration for others that aren't so lucky right now. It is just what I was thinking as I was driving back from getting some Chick Fil A for lunch.

Most of the Generalizations are true.

I'm 25 and from Suburban Minneapolis. I'am single... and it might have something to do that I spend a lot of times at Canterbury on the weekends. But, I don't stay so late that I can't go meet friends for a drink around 10 or so.

To maybe take it in a different direction, at least for me- I'am independent enough where I can spend the $$$ on gambling right now. No wife and kids to direct my $$$ towards. One day hopefully I'll meet a nice woman (or a Cajun Gator) that will be worth my time and $$$, so I'm not at the track. I of course plan on having my priorities in order in terms of expenses once I have a stable family life, but my wife will have to be comfy with me goin to the track when time and $$$ can spare it haha.

That would kill me to lose that kind of money knowing I could have spent it on my child.

I liked being single and would have stayed that way had it not been for meeting my wife (special one in a world where there are so many not so special ones). It was a lot easier gambling when I was single because I had more disposable income and I didnt stress about when I had to be home.
Thank God my wife knows how much I love horse racing and shes not the kind of person who wouldnt take that away from me, irregardless of the bad stigma that comes with guys who gamble on horses. Creating a nice balance between the 2 (horse racing & having a great marriage) is the best of both worlds.

You can't really blame PointGiven1985 for losing $900 at the track -- it actually could have been much worse -- hell, he could have sold the kid for gambling money.

I may just get to meet you guys on FL Derby day! I don't know yet if we are doing the FULL weekend show that weekend and if we are I won't be able to make it, but it is still up in the air. If we aren't doing the horse show, I will be there!

Holland Hacker 02-20-2007 02:32 PM

I guess I'm just average:

1. White

2. Graduate degree

3. I was 15 my first time (1981 Haskell at Monmouth)

4. New Jersey

5. 41

6. Never been to another board. Checked this one out to find Byk's Picks after listening to ATRAB.

7. Bet +/- $ 20 per race although this is increasing as I play more Pick 3s & 4s after reading Exotic Betting & having some success.

8. Not applicable as I'm over 40. But I am married and have a 5 yo son (He's already been to Monmouth, Saratoga, Aqueduct, Belmont and Tampa Bay Downs) My wife had never been to the track before she met me. He first trip to the track was Smoke Glacken's Sapling at Monmouth. She now picks winners simply by looking at the horses in the paddock and has had a fair amount of success usually better in sprints.

brianwspencer 02-20-2007 02:44 PM

Interesting Thought

1. White.

2. College Degree

3. First went to the races at about age four at Arlington Park with my mom. Been going ever since.

4. From Chicago, though spent my share of time on the coasts. Best of both worlds!

5. 23, slightly outside your demographic prediction.

6. Came from ESPN, after about an 18 month horse-message-board hiatus

7. Usually bet between $125-$200 a day. Usually focusing on win bets and pick-3 wagers.

8. Most of the under 40 crowd are not married. Especially the men on here. Not married.

Why is the bigger question? Has nothing to do with horse racing......

Danzig 02-20-2007 03:25 PM

ok, i'll play....

white.
high school diploma.
no one in my family interested in racing. have loved horses for as long as i can remember, and i guess that combined with a sheer competitive spirit made me a natural horse racing fan.
grew up in maryland, moved to arkansas about 12 years ago.
on the cusp of 40 (ouch).
started posting on the espn board back when war emblem won the derby.
not much of a bettor-no opportunity from home. don't make it to the track much either, certainly not as much as i would like.
happily married for 21 years. tony enjoys going to the track-or maybe he just enjoys me enjoying going to the track! he's taking me to arlington this year, sweet!

Cajun's cool. Let me find the oyster thread...it's gotta be here somewhere.
Me?
Purple at birth. Turned pink later. Now, mauve.
Age?
Old enough to be your daddy.
Racing and horses? Very young when it started, still in my blood.
Amount bet? Huge! I'm a breeder...'nuf said.
What were the other questions?
Help me out Mera. Yikes!

AeWingnut 02-20-2007 06:46 PM

I just want to say that I don't see how race, gender, work ethic? has anything to do with racing. Why take somethng that brings people together and try and divide them up. Ofcourse if we were all together then the horse's odds would suffer..

I am working on a theory that will tie the Derby attendance to global warming.

For what it's worth:

1. White
2. Seton Hall Univesity
3. 16 Years old my first time at Yonkers, then Freehold, Roosevelt, Belmont quickly after that.
4. Long Island-NY
5. 53...feel like 33 :p
6. Came to the board after meeting Steve B at his Saratoga Carolina BBQ morning handicapping seminars. Many years on PaceAdvantage and PaceFigures boards.
7. Average bettor, but I bet more on the ones I own with partners when they race. A little inside info doesn't hurt!:D
8. Married, but live almost separate life because of our professions. And when I'm home, it's off to Saratoga or Belmont with my youngest son who loves to visit my horses at the backstretch and spend a day at the races with his dad. Get to meet a lot of great single gals at the races, especially Saratoga Travers week. Have been with the same group of single college grads who love horse racing & travel from Boston each Travers day. Bring them to paddock, backstretch for AM workouts and clubhouse for lunch. We always plan to meet the following Travers day at the same spot.;)

all the chi people should do it, dell, scavs, you, brian, playa, plus any out-of-towners. maybe this should be officialized in the meeting area.
believe me, Dell will be there, it will be official.

Count me in for an Arlington trip this summer. Canterbury invaders always do well at Arlington lol.

8. Most of the under 40 crowd are not married. Especially the men on here. Why is the bigger question? Maybe b/c our hobby is not conducive to meeting women, which is undoubtedly true. More likely, b/c serious gamblers do not often make good mates. I think they are less likely to want commitment and are independent types in general. Plus, handicapping, if you are serious about, is a time consuming process.

I told my first wife I would, and never did, get in trouble by meeting a girl at the track. It was largely true, and I believed it.

The only exception had come on a day when I was not married and I was at the Easy Goer-Sunday Silence Belmont. Near the paddock I met a girl I spent the rest of the day with.

THAT was a nice day.

After my divorce, I was at an OTB in Indianapolis late one Saturday afternoon.

A girl showed unusual interest in my wagering and well being, and struck up a conversation with me.

After I placed my bet for the next race, I asked her in a kind, good natured way, "You're a hooker, aren't you?"

She wasn't. She was just a horsey girl out of her home town on a business trip.

Turned out "You're a hooker, aren't you? was a heckuva good pickup line.

Whodathunkit!
