Poachers wipe out rhino in Mozambique park

2013-04-26

(excerpt)

Cape Town - Poachers, aided by game rangers, have killed every single rhino in the Mozambique section of one of Southern Africa’s most vaunted transfrontier parks.

The director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare's wildlife crime and consumer awareness programme, Kelvin Alie, said poachers had killed 15 rhino in Mozambique's Limpopo National Park last month, the last remaining animals from an estimated population of more than 300 when the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park was proclaimed in 2002.

The administrator of the Limpopo National Park told media that 30 rangers will appear in court soon, charged with involvement in the killing of the rhino.

“It is tragic beyond tears that we learn game rangers have now become the enemy in the fight to protect rhino from being poached for their horns.

“That the entire rhino population of part of such an important conservation initiative can be wiped out – and with the help of wildlife enforcement officers - speaks volumes about the deadly intent of the wildlife trade

South Korea to release dolphin back into wild
Sapa-AFP | 11 May, 2013 12:06

A 13-year-old dolphin was Saturday being transported to an ocean pen off a South Korean island for training to prepare it for release back into the wild after four years in a Seoul zoo, officials said.

Yummy:eek: Something Altogether Offal.

Quote:

The prospect of preparing offal for consumption may seem daunting, but on Offal Good, Cosentino breezes through several recipes like they were nothing at all. Here are a few of the best, and some of his tips for making them:

- Calf's Brains With Porcinis and Capers: Cosentino describes brains as "a beautiful creamy cut," and recommends poaching them in a bouillon before cooking. He also suggests getting something called a brain fork, "which any self-respecting offal eater should own."

- Duck Fries With Bacon and Peas: No, these aren't potatoes cooked in duck fat. They're the aforementioned testicles, and Cosentino suggests browning them in bacon fat. "This is probably the hardest one to get folks to tuck into," he admits.

- Porchetta Di Testa: Better known as "a pig's head that is boned out, then marinated for two days with rosemary and garlic, rolled and tied, then braised for 14 hours." Cosentino quite naturally suggests "[splitting] the skull with a saw to save the brains and have a proper butcher's treat of brains and egg."

If you're thinking of exploring the wide world of offal in your own kitchen, make sure Chris Cosentino is your guide. What could it hurt to try?

My husband and I spent a couple of days at a resort where they fed you- top class food, but you had no choice as to what they served. My husband said he could handle anything but sweetbreads. And so, of course, on our second night, they served sweetbreads. And they were freaking delicious. Husband finished my portion, in fact!

I'm not leaping to try offal, but most anything, I think, tastes good if it's prepared right. Heck, Clarice Starling seemed to enjoy it in Hannibal. ;)

What not to eat

Not my cup of tea, either, but there is an Italian dish called Capozzelli di Angnelli (Italian lamb's head) that's supposed to be quite a delicacy.

Speaking of lamb, you ever tried Lebanese kabob -lamb on the rod- cooked on a grille and perfectly seasoned...yum

big, that looks like NYC street food, so probably have tried it as the "mystery meat" special.

Listen, I ate "on the economy" in Korea for a year and sure I dined on dog and cat (without knowing it) as well as lots of kim chee. No lasting damage to my innards, I don't think.

I shall refrain from a tirade on the ethics of eating, the phoniness of some who, in their desperate attempt to show they have class and breeding, laud the consumption of delicacies (no one here) and shall respond with one word:

Eeew!

From the Tokyo Times

Japan promotes whale meat as cure for fatigue
1 hour ago by Tokyo Times in National
(excerpt)

Japan’s Institute for Cetacean Research (ICR) has launched a new campaign in order to increase whale meat sales. The meat is promoted as a nutritious food that reduces fatigue and increases physical strength.

The country has at the moment around 5,000 tonnes of whale meat sitting unsold in supermarkets’ freezers, so ICR has decided to launch a campaign that would promote the product of its so-called scientific whaling program.

Years ago, whale meat used to be popular in school lunches, but now younger generations barely eat whale.

i'd have to think the closest for me would be new orleans, san antonio. i don't know of an aquarium in little rock.
why are they protesting at aquariums? the one we went to in atlanta seemed more interested in helping preserve endangered species and helping with rescue and rehab.
sea worlds on the other hand.....

Yeah some are about rescue and rehab. I think it makes sense, in an effort to raise awareness (and to send a message) to stage protests/ educational events at the aquariums as well as the horrible places where these animals are exploited and abused.

They should do what the rhino people are planning and what walk for farm animals does and stage a sleep in / virtual walk for people out of the area. :)
