Bats, Bats all over me...
We have this huge bat cave to the northeast of us.(Bracken Cave)
Very close to the racetrack at mighty Retama Park. Sometimes they give false images on radar. Tonight is one of those nights. Enjoy this natural feast. SAT is San Antonio Texas of course. Attachment 871 |
When bats come out of a cave in large groups like
these Mexican Freetails do, they swirl out like a corkscrew. From distance it looks like wind blowing black smoke. But when you get closer the corkscrewing and all the little fluttering which amounts to a really interesting sound. Anyways, why do bats in large groups corkscrew like this instead of flying like birds in large flocks or like fish (if you have ever been snorkeling and been in a large school ya know what Ima talkin about) in a school? very diff pattern of avoiding running into each other... I wanna know so bat-people give it up. |
Is it me or is the picture not showing?

:zz: |
OH MY GOD!!
Did you see that? It was hideous!!! |
Did anyone see the radar...?
Those were frkkn bats causing that green patch around SAT. Ok. Why do they corkscrew formation fly? |
Because cork is a hot female bat.

Do people not realize the magnitude of bat it takes to show up on a weather radar? |
Maybe they all were named Ray.

If anyone has seen phenomena it begs the question. |
Really quite interesting, the radar and the reason why they spiral.
For the record the radar pic came up for me on the first post. Is this unusual or does it re-occur every year? I have seen bats come out of caves before but never thought it could be read on radar. |

Sometimes they trickle out and it does not show up. But this is a huge colony of bats. Much much larger than the one at Carlsbad. In fact in may be the largest in North America. |

BTW can you go catch some and send them here to eat the mosquitoes.....:D We have a few bats around here but not that many. I'm thinking about getting some bat houses. |
They may be returning to Louisville.
It's like Capistrano. |

Its dangerous to get real close because rattlesnakes and all sorts of other critters come up to eat any of the sick ones that might not make it on the fly out. It only happens around sunset and for some reason they come out real dense certain summer evenings and it shows up on the radar. I can send you some if you can get Morty to come down here and we can use his hair as a giant net. |
It wouldn't be the first time.

Your bat thread got me to thinking about caves. When I used to tour New Zealand we did the Waitomo Caves, the glow-worms cave. The caves were really beautiful with stalagmites and stalactites and then you took a boat ride in the black water to view the glow-worms. After awhile it really freaked me out that the glow-worms would fall on my head, so I had to wear a hat. It was a unique experience. |
Ever stick pins in your belly?
Boy now that's fun. |
Ever had glow-worms fall on your head?
They would get stuck in your giant hair net....:p |
But you don't have to GO HALF WAY ACROSS THE WORLD.....to stick pins in your belly.

Sort of related though, caves and things that live in them. |

Usually when one hides, they don't announce where they are. |
I said it was dumb.
No one will find me now because I am not going to say where I am. |

Now you're getting it.:) |

I have lost boys to attend to...and must starch my wings, so I can't play hide and seek with you right now. |
I wouldn't worry Mort. She seems to have lost some boys too.:D
