What are they smoking by putting the Obispo as the 3rd?

When Hammer cards a turf stake early in the day, it is usually because rain is in the forecast. They figure there is a better chance the course will be in good enough shape earlier on in the afternoon to be able to stay on the grass.

And indeed, a visit to Weather Underground confirms that some rain is in the forecast for Arcadia.

Friday Mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of rain. Highs around 60. Southeast winds around 15 mph shifting to the south in the afternoon.

Friday Night Rain. Lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s.

Saturday Showers likely. Breezy. Highs in the 50s. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.

A better question would be "Who cares why they stuck it in the third race?".

How ironic a 1 1/2 mile race fills 13 horses where a sprint only fills 7. I hope this continues this way.

I know this really has nothing to do with it, but could it somehow be because of timing? One would think that the handle would be greater for a race that goes off at 4:30 est as opposed to 7:30 est bc alot of horseplayers will be right in the thick of things at east coast tracks.

Even with the ease of which I can make a wager these days, I'm more apt to play a west coast race while it's sandwiched between the two or three tracks that I'm following that day, then I am to wait a few hours after my the tracks are done running and get back into the swing of things with a fresh approach.

None of this makes any real sense, just my two cent$.

Fun race that San Vicente. It'll be interesting to see how much money The Cripple takes.

Isn't it a little early to assume he's going to be a cripple?

Considering he already has feet problems and enters this race with two works in 42 days, his health is a bit of a concern. He's obviously incredibly fast but he's going to get a hell of a battle early in here if the field stays intact.

He wins this race in a laugher. I guess running 108 beyers means you should be right back on the worktab the next day.

Maybe at 3 AM after an apocalyptic event has cleared out 90% of the LA basin.

They announced that IF the San Luis Obispo is run on turf then the gate will be positioned at the 5/8ths pole and it'll be run from there. No downhill course.

Anyone have ''on-site'' details on the rain? Looks pretty bad at Los Al.

Tremendous stretch duel between Champ Peg and Bourbon Bay.

Mandella said its off to Dubai in 5 weeks. Will never see "The Champ" again

Rosario defies belief sometimes.

Granted I think all the horses he beat are pigs but how much the best was Smiling Tiger? Wow.

I know this guy Rollo thought he couldnt be good at 7 and was limited to 6f.. I guess this Twirling Candy is the Real Deal.. Although I am sure FlippoTomasi will back into some story AGAIN

It appears that they're going to start running 6f in 1:05 out there.

Indian Winter was just scratched from the San Vicente Stakes

Did you hear why he scratched? Was looking forward to watching this horse against The Factor....but anyway The Factor was impressive, not sure about the classic distance for him but I am excited to see whats next for him

The Factor could contend in the King's Bishop if they don't cook him before then. . . The second-place finisher is a very intriguing derby prospect.

Sway Away is only going to gain from that start and I agree, he's interesting. The Factor should not be sent two turns, but I'm sure he will.

I know it was his first start back and all but I'm not really that impressed with Sway Away. The Factor is getting attacked early on both sides and still has enough to win. Sway Away is dead last and saving ground and just at the very end starts making up ground on The Factor. The Factor clearly has foot problems and was not a definite for this race until Monday, less then a week ago. IMO he is out rolling because he is that naturally gifted. He does not break right on top and never seems headstrong. In other words I think he will rate. I'm not convinced he cant win the Santa Anita Derby and I'm not convinced that Sway Away is really that good. 9f and 10f are totally different animals. If this guy is healthy, and Baffert AKA the GOAT, AKA my HERO can work him I'm confident he can win a major Derby prep at 9f. Im just not sure about the big one going 10f. With all that being said I also feel he is the most likely Derby contender to be done for an extend period of time or retired due to injury.

Don't you have to try? Even if ypu think the possiblity is remote that he would be successful doesnt he deserve a shot? What do you think they should do just go to the Met Mile? He might not win such a race against older?
