Women's World Cup

All I can say is wow! What a victory for the US women in the quarter final match with Brazil! Down 2-1 with seconds left a perfect pass and a header into the net tied the game which we then won going 5-5 in penalty kicks! The US won this despite a bogus red card that made us play 10-11 players, a terrible call against our goalie when she blocked the penalty kick that followed and an off sides that wasn't called enabling Brazil to get their second goal. This is a storybook ending for an American team that refused to quit against all odds!

I enjoy your posts very much.

Looking forward to the Synchronized William Tell sports season.

and France. US plays France in semis.

Caveated with the admission that I just don't watch women's soccer, but on a slow sports day, I tuned in and have to say the official yesterday made the fellow in last year's US-Slovakia look like the Durwood Merrill of soccer officials. The PK "rekick" was awful, there was a clear offsides on Brazil's second goal, and a straight red for a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge is virtually unprecedented.

Anybody got a link to the video highlights of this game?

I can't believe in a million years ESPN is ranking this 5th all-time most dramatic moment in sports. Then again, maybe I can believe it.

slotdirt 07-11-2011 01:38 PM

ESPN or a stupid ESPN survey? One of those dumb surveys also had this as a superior moment in US Soccer history to last year's Algeria game, which is pure poppycock. Women's World Cup garners like 1/50th the viewers of the real World Cup.

That being said, it was a pretty exciting moment.

Maybe they are just trying to generate ratings for the rest of the tourney.

ateamstupid 07-11-2011 02:32 PM

I don't care if it was men, women or dogs playing that game, that was the most exciting goal I've ever seen live. Considering what they were up against, it's most definitely a more amazing goal than Donovan's. Poetic justice that it came during the extra time granted by Erika's completely bogus injury. These chicks kick ass.

Good angle. I'm not hating on the sport or what happened, we have been glued to the tube at work watching. This is one of those "now" things, IMO.

99...

Bigsmc 07-11-2011 03:28 PM

Exciting goal/finish or not, it will be just a footnote in Women's Soccer history if they don't close the deal and win the whole thing.

Great quarterfinal games between two teams that did not win the cup are not remembered for long.

They are? I'm not even sure their rotation is the best in baseball right now, let alone best of all time as folks were predicting preseason.

hahahhahahahha. this proves you have no credibility. rotation not the best in baseball? are you serious? do you watch baseball at all?

phillies have barely been able to hit this year and they have the best record in MLB. wonder why?

I need to come back and address what might be the dumbest sports comment of all time. (next to vick cant lead a team to the playoffs???)

Lets see..

Oswalt is injured, but Halladay, Hamels, Lee... top 3 in innings pitched for their league, by FAR the most complete games in baseball. Their COMBINED ERA IS 2.53 I'll repeat that. 2.53 31-13 record and the team is 40-17 in games they started. they've gone at least 7 innings in 44 of their 57 starts. They are 3 of the top 5 in strikeouts and also are have a great Strike out to walk ratio. 3 of the top 9 in all of baseball for the WAR stat (Halladay #1, Hamels #6, Lee #9) all of them all stars and also all three would be in the top 5 of Cy Young candidates (Halladay would probably get the Cy young right now. JJ of the braves has more wins (by 1) and a lower ERA... but halladay has pitched 1/3 more innings then him... I'll repeat again.. 1/3 more innings, like twice the amount of strike outs and 6 complete games compared to 2 for JJ.

So we have 3 of the top 9 starters in all of baseball but we're not the best rotation??? you sir, have a plain old wrong opinion. Even braves, redsox and yankee fans would disagree with you.

Your comment proved you have no leg to stand on so maybe your not even worth debating baseball with.

Really? I just read an article from Buster Olney the other day that listed the Braves as a better staff than the Phillies this year, with the Giants not far behind.

Quit being such a homer. Seriously. There are other teams out there besides your beloved Phillies.

hahhahahahah.

so you read an article... meaning you havent watched baseball.

zero credibility. 99 out of 100 scouts / managers would say the phillies have the best rotation.

and the braves have a better bullpen... the best in the majors. not a better rotation.

just give up, you have no leg to stand on.

Antitrust32 07-12-2011 08:43 AM

its hilarious that you believe the stuff you type.

slotdirt 07-12-2011 08:44 AM

Right, 99 out of 100. A surefire sign of a failed argument when someone posts a stat that can't be proven. Carry on, homer.

slotdirt 07-12-2011 08:47 AM

And don't get so sour just because a former Tigers castoff making a paltry $3.25 million is the midseason frontrunner to win the NL Cy Young when your staff has three different guys making at least three times that much.

ETA - even Joe Blanton is making $9.5 million! That's some money well spent. Wish my team could have a $165 million payroll.

Tigers are not in the NL by the way.

and I could care less about money. that has nothing to do with your inept argurment

so your jealous... thats what made you make a dumb comment?

slotdirt 07-12-2011 08:51 AM

Here's a fact: rotations are more than three guys. Are there rainouts every fourth and fifth day when the Phillies play? Because based on your post, one would think that only Lee, Halladay, and Hamels - all great pitchers - are the only ones ever taking the mound for the Phils.

hey guess what.

McNabb is awesome he should never have been traded.

Vick cant lead a team to the playoffs.

I could go on and on with your anti-Philly statements that you make up cause you are jealous.

Reading comprehension, homer: "former Tigers castoff," meaning Jair Jurjjens used to play for the Tigers and was castoff for a bucket of balls and two pouches of Big League Chew.

Dude, I'M FROM PHILLY! Why would I be jealous? I just call out blind homerism when I see it.

P.S. - why did you lie? Halladay isn't #1 in baseball for WAR for pitchers. Verlander is (by a lot).

okay we can talk about Vance Worley. 2.20 ERA

Kendrick is a spot starter who's won games and has a 3.58 ERA

Oswalt and Blanton have spent the majority of the season on the DL... though before Oswalt was hurt and pitched hurt a few times, he had a 2.6ERA. he pitched in 4 more games when injured and balooned his ERA to 3.79

yeah, that really helps your arguement

Halladay would most likely win the Cy Young right now.

6 complete games to 2

almost double the quality starts

1/3 more innings. twice the strike outs

do you think there is any team in baseball that would take Jurjjens over Halladay?

why is Halladay starting the all star game over Jurjjens if JJ is better? doesnt the best pitcher on the squad start.

you fail.

oh yeah?

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.asp...n=2011&month=0

who's the liar?

Halladay #1, Hamels #6, Lee #9

Verlander is 4th.

slotdirt 07-12-2011 09:02 AM

Almost double the quality starts? WTF is a quality start in your book? If it's six innings with three runs or less, then ol' Jair has like 15 of them this season. So Halladay has 30? I'm impressed!

A Sabermetrician you are not, my friend.

slotdirt 07-12-2011 09:02 AM

http://www.baseball-reference.com/le...pitching.shtml

Right back at you, toots. Verlander #1.
