Bats, Bats all over me...

We have this huge bat cave to the northeast of us.(Bracken Cave)
Very close to the racetrack at mighty Retama Park.
Sometimes they give false images on radar.
Tonight is one of those nights. Enjoy this natural feast.
SAT is San Antonio Texas of course.

When bats come out of a cave in large groups like
these Mexican Freetails do, they swirl out like a corkscrew.
From distance it looks like wind blowing black smoke.
But when you get closer the corkscrewing and all the little
fluttering which amounts to a really interesting sound.

Anyways, why do bats in large groups corkscrew like this
instead of flying like birds in large flocks or like fish (if you
have ever been snorkeling and been in a large school ya know
what Ima talkin about) in a school?

very diff pattern of avoiding
running into each other...

I wanna know so bat-people give it up.

I still need an answer from the bat people.

Cajungator26 06-29-2008 08:33 AM

Wow.

:zz:

Mortimer 06-29-2008 10:09 AM

OH MY GOD!!

Did you see that?

It was hideous!!!

pgardn 06-29-2008 01:46 PM

Did anyone see the radar...?
Those were frkkn bats causing that green patch around SAT.

Ok.
Why do they corkscrew formation fly?

Mortimer 06-29-2008 02:16 PM

Because cork is a hot female bat.

Do people not realize the magnitude of bat
it takes to show up on a weather radar?

Maybe they all were named Ray.

Apparently, they fly in formation like that because it scares the birds away.

And I thank you Ms. Gator.
If anyone has seen phenomena it begs the question.

Really quite interesting, the radar and the reason why they spiral.

For the record the radar pic came up for me on the first post.

Is this unusual or does it re-occur every year?

I have seen bats come out of caves before but never thought it could be read on radar.

It happens here every so often if they all come out at roughly the same time.
Sometimes they trickle out and it does not show up. But this is a huge colony of bats. Much much larger than the one at Carlsbad. In fact in may be the largest in North America.

Hmmm, didn't know that (larger than Carlsbad) and your in San Antonio, did you see them or it was just on the radar?

BTW can you go catch some and send them here to eat the mosquitoes.....:D
We have a few bats around here but not that many. I'm thinking about getting some bat houses.

Mortimer 06-29-2008 07:23 PM

They may be returning to Louisville.

It's like Capistrano.
