Chris Warren, director of racing for Delta, said on Monday that he was looking for a nine-horse field for the Princess. Those expected for the one-mile race are Truth and Justice, who won the local prep, the $125,000 My Trusty Cat; Bella Diamante and Best Reward, who were second and third in that race; Joanie's Catch, who was to arrive Tuesday from Florida; Quiet Temper, who scratched out of the Grade 2 Golden Rod at Churchill; Drewman Prince, Lela, The Rumor's True, and Woman Soldier.

Warren on Monday said he was looking for eight or nine horses from the 10 pre-entered to go back into the Jackpot. Rule, who won the $175,000 Jean Lafitte at Delta in November, is scheduled to arrive from Kentucky on Wednesday. Gallant Gent was to fly into Louisiana on Wednesday, said his trainer, Craig Lewis. Kent Desormeaux has the mount on Gallant Gent, Lewis said. The Jackpot is also expected to draw Uh Oh Bango, who was to arrive Tuesday from Remington Park; Bench the Judge, who for the past month has been based at Delta; Grand Slam Andre; Man Chester Man; My Time to Star and Oak Motte. Litigation Risk, a maiden winner based at Aqueduct with trainer Rick Violette, is a possible, said Warren.

She Be Wild was going, but Catalano decided no over the weekend. Will be off until Jan-Feb

GBB,

Funny you added that as I was going to comment on it too, and applaud Catalano passing this gimmicky event. It's hard to find many horses that go to these 2 races and manage to have a great sophomore season. It's seems to strictly be a money grab. I think you only go to this if you have a juvy you don't expect to hold together at 3 but is in form now...

The last 2 years of the Jackpot for instance...

2008

Big Drama (Did fine at 3..)
West Side Bernie (Did OK at 3; sold to Godolphin..)
Stimulus Plus (What happened to him?)
Retap (Who knows...)
Terrain (Dead)
Skipadate (Never materialized)
Valid Message
Trinity Magic
Three PartHarmony

2007

Z Humor (Wasted talent ruined by Zayat/Sobhy Sonbol)
Turf War (Never much horse thereafter)
Golden Yank.. (A personal favorite that turned out OK long term)
Racecar Rhapsody (Moscow Derby?)
Overextended (!!!)
St. Joe
Cave's Valley (Won a race or two but wasn't what Trombetta hoped for..)
Betatron
Take the Money
Cudjo

2008 Princess (Kind of interesting... Gifts, Jenda and Silk have been OK..)

Four Gifts
C. S. Silk
Smokin Again
Loveyou Everybody
Just Jenda
Seacrettina
Phoenician Moon
Southern Yankee
Garter Belt

Isn't it a trainers job to point to a race where they have a shot to win when their horse is in form? Money grab? Sorry, but this is confusing.

Yep. Its a grade 3 race that attracts grade 3 horses. Because of the purse some of those types can get into the classics (didn't 3 of the runners last year run in the Triple Crown?) which is the downside.

The race has produced Outta Here, Texcess, Fire Slam, Big Drama, Terrain, Mr. Jester, Freesgood, all Grade 3 types for the most part. Not seeing what big time horses have been ruined or suckered into running because of greed.

Not dismissing the concept of seizing the moment and running as opportunity knocks... My point is that it's a second tier event, on a strange surface (the "Sabine Sand"), at a minor track, for disproportionate money... and good horses with 'real' futures seem better off passing on participation there.

Coach Pants 12-01-2009 09:22 AM

They need a bull ring triple crown.

Or maybe they'll add a 4 furlong race to the BC. It's probably about time...the format hasn't changed since November.

robfla 12-01-2009 09:47 AM

didn't Closing Argument finish 2nd to Texcess in the Jackpot before it was graded

Indian Charlie 12-01-2009 05:27 PM

I like that in the Boyd Gaming's Delta Princess S. Powered by Youbet.com (G3) race you have fillies with the names of:

Woman Soldier
Truth and Justice
Quiet Temper

Sorry Steve, but calling this a second tier event is one of your worst quotes.
I can't even comprehend this statement.

What about the fact earnings for the Derby?? I don't think Mott, or Casse would agree with you.

The 2007 contest has to be the best race of the year. Have you really looked at the history of this race, other than the Zayat bash.?

I don't think Bill Mott would send out a money grabber, but would look at 1/1/4 in May as a step stone here.

The Hopeful Stakes is a bigger Fake of 2 year olds. Most are never heard from again.

You can't be serious

hockey2315 12-01-2009 05:50 PM

The Test is for three-year-old fillies.

I agree here. But Delta I don't

Kasept 12-01-2009 06:05 PM

The Delta Jackpot.

As it happens I was a real fan of Outta Here, Texcess and Z Humor, so don't get me wrong... But the Jackpot is a gimmick race on a gimmick racetrack.

2008 Big Drama
2007 Z Humor & Turf War (DH)
2006 Birdbirdistheword
2005 no race
2004 Texcess

2002 Outta Here

What? The only reason Bill Mott ran Z Humor in that race was because Sohby Sonbol was calling the shots for Ahmed Zayat at the time. You think Mott made the call to run Z Humor later that winter twice in 8 days too?

Yes, Bill agreed, and he was right wasn't he. **** happens after the race, but getting to the big race is important too!

OK.. You win. Bill 'agreed'. The horse was handled exactly as it would have been had he been making the decisions.
