we have our Panda-Kids ready for the 6:15 pm post tomorrow.

This major event takes place tonight and all the reports are that the horses and trainers are thrilled with the new surface. Now we'll see how the races will be.

If anyone needed Poly it was Woodbine and Turfway. Woodbine basically runs all year so they need this type of surface. I think it will be a success.

just looking at some of the results of tonights initial races on the all weather track and i don't see anything unusual. speed seems to be holding although a determined effort from off the pace can finish in the money.

I was on the fence on the issue, but after seeing todays races I am sure its going to be great. I hated the kickback, but the results on the horses can not be debated. There was no kickback at WO, and it looked exactly the same.

The announcer said that the horses go almost as fast on the slower surface because they are more comfortable with the footing as its completely even so they trust themselves to go at full speed.

Sumitas,
As you know, I'm all for safety.
The full card wouldn't down load, so I ask based only what I say.
Do you think the splits were a bit slow? Does this surface make for slower splits and make the horses work harder?
I only ask because one of mine trained in South Jersey at a private farm. Their training track was pure sand, no base...kinda like running at the beach.
Very safe for the horse but very slow.

the splits on all weather race 1 8.5f (the all weather is listed as fast)
24.55 48.91 1:13.85 1:38.93 1:45.43 (fav was 2nd)
race 2 on the turf
race 3 6.5f
22.95 46.80 1:12.65 1:19.56 (2nd and 3rd betting favs finished 1/2, fav last)
race 4 6f
22.73 46.77 59.79 1:13.00 (fav 3rd, 2nd betting fav won, 19/1 came in 2nd)
race 5 6f
22.79 46.49 59.21 112:81 (27-1 shot wins, fav 2nd)

seems like fair times to me with a nice mix of odds on the board. these times are very comparible to Finger Lakes on the 28th when their track was listed as fast.

sumitas 08-30-2006 08:45 PM

race 6 8.5f the Eternal Search S. (f, 3 yr old))
24.69 49.51 1:14.52 140.55 1:47.01 (fav 3rd, 1 & 2 betting favs finished 1,2)

horses are winning on the front end, some are coming from off the pace to finish on the board. seems like a fair surface.

Thanks Sumitas,
Looks like it's ok. Might slow them a tick, but fair to all.
I've heard that some horses really take to it. Then there are some that like macadam. I wonder how some of these will do when they run on a different surface.
As long as they run safe, that's enough to get my vote.

comparing tonight's WPS handle per race to Wed 8/23 at Woodbine
tonight --- Wed 8/23 (previous Wed)
$70,579 --- $75,271
$96,751 --- $100,494
$75,977 --- $82,052
$88,355--- $91,451
$90,809 --- $83,551
$107,256 --- $76,873 ( a stakes race tonight 9/30)
$84,246 --- $77,088
the handle thru the first 7 races tonight is comparible to last wed's handle so the public is voting for the new track.

it's the same surface for all the contestants, and if it's safe, i agree, what's the problem ?
i see what you're saying on the splits, the times might be just a tick (1/5 sec) slower than the dirt but are really quite similar.

Hahaha,

I don't mind the polytrack and welcome it, but the thought of someone whacking off to it really got me tickled.

here's a pic of the macadam surface beneath the top layer of poly.
http://www.woodbineentertainment.com...2F2007+23%3A59

interesting to note, with the potential for lots of rain for Saratoga this weekend, the polytrack stays basically the same regardless of weather. You don't have to pull your hair out handicapping and re-handicapping like you do for dirt when it's wet.
