7/28: Saratoga (Day 6; Quick Call)

The inspiring individuals performances we got to watch Wednesday -- from Frankel to J C's Pride to Winter Memories (to even Lovely Lil) -- were more than enough to make up for an uninspiring performance at the windows.

Frankel throttled Canford Cliffs in the Sussex, an it was a prequel for Barbara 2yo J C's Pride who set a new 5f track record and a jaw-droppingly dominant Lake George win by Winter Memories who may be the best turf horse in the U.S. of any age or sex. In the nightcap, Hushion NY-bred filly refused to lose as she fought on the lead every step and still held Chad Brown's Yawkey Way at bay down the stretch. The only decent casher of the day was a $190 P3 ending with $17 Wedding in Sorano (Colum O'Brien). Despite that, I still managed to drop more than $200. Hope you did OK.

Lots of good races Thursday. Del Mar P6 had one winner who included two $40 winners on the play for a $1.1 million paysay. Bobby Flay spent more than an hour with me on ATR Wednesday, with visits from Mig and Satish sprinkled in to his nice stint. Catch the archive or podcast!

Guys -- Thx very much. Was a really fun day. Hope many did well!

Thought it was noteworthy that finding and employing just 2 interesting horses -- Boots Ahead and Moon Struck Nemi -- made it a lucrative afternoon. (I'll also note that being home for the day, away from the frenetic activity at the track, made playing much easier.)

Now let's get ready for another big race weekend!

dagolfer33 07-28-2011 08:21 PM

Wow. Nice day top to bottom Steve. I guess I picked the wrong day off to go to Chuck E Cheese ( however, I did hit a nice 100 free ticket bonus on the Monopoly machine). I have a rare weekend yard pass, so here's to a huge weekend.:tro:

Great job Steve! Curious, what was it you liked about Moon Struck Nemi?

Thx. Had run as a good a race 'first turf' as anything he ran on dirt, so there was potential for improvement and any improvement put him in the mix; He was 2nd off the break; Was getting a significant rider upgrade (no matter what anyone wants to think of 'Meaux); Was dropping to an appropriate level; Had closer style in field with a lot of speed; Was going to be an attractive price; Ronny Werner pretty adept with turf sprinters (i.e. Central City, 22% W's)..

There was plenty to like. That said, I found out later last night that Warner almost scratched out of the spot!
