did you see the way that hoss went yesterday ? derby hoss, what beautiful action. He's long and sturdy too, which should help him stay healthy. I think I'm in love.

Does Caleb's Posse shoot for the Sprint at 6F or the Dirt Mile at 1m?

Does anyone else think Mo and Shackleford should go for the Dirt Mile instead of the Classic?

He was brilliant. Mike Welsch joined Seth Merrow and I on TV Saturday morning and when I asked him for one horse on the card outside of the stakes he instantly barked out "Kimmel's Unbridled Song colt in the 2nd is working like a monster. Could be special, etc.." Rich Migliore as well has been around the Kimmel barn a lot this summer having his 2 Summit Racing colts there, and had spoken glowingly of the colt's promise.

That said, we'll see about 'Derby horse' material. His pedigree has a middle distance feel to it at a glance, and the female family has 'sprinty' up front. Fire On Ice's dam Lost in the Storm (Storm Cat) was unraced, but being out of Lost the Code (Lost Code) she is a half to Squirtle Squirt (Marquetry). Another sib of Lost in the Storm was Il Capricio (Langfuhr), a 3x winner (27/3-4-6; $88k) that never did anything beyond 7f. Lost the Code herself was a hard-knocking claiming mare that won 13x between 6-7f in 60 starts for $180k, (for Bernie Flint among many others).

That being said, if you want to look for latent route-going ability in Fire On Ice, he does hale from a VERY interesting and famous female family that goes back to top producing blue hens like Cherokee Rose and her dam The Squaw. Cherokee Rose (Princequillo) got Fast Turn (Turn-To), dam of the great Ack Ack (Sire of Broad Brush), and her full sister How won the CCAO, KY Oaks and Ladies H. After racing, How got Pocahontas (Roman) who won the Schuylerville ahead of her own career in the shed which saw a Broodmare of the Year distinction in 1965 via the exploits of her Chieftan (Bold Ruler) and... Tom Rolfe (Ribot)! A Canadian division of the female line has also seen classic success including 1997 Breeders S. winner John the Magician (Bold Ruckus).

Kimmel told me earlier that the Champagne (10/8/11) is likely next for Fire On Ice..

hockey2315 08-28-2011 04:22 PM

I like Fire On Ice too, but he has zero chance to be around by the derby. I'm surprised he's still in Kimmel's care to be honest. . . thought they'd sell him.

Calzone Lord 08-28-2011 04:27 PM

The 2nd place slowpoke is your classic distance horse with all the breeding -- and with enough raw speed to fool those connections into thinking they could win the Travers day MSW with him.

hockey2315 08-28-2011 04:46 PM

The show horse ran on well late - he's an interesting routing prospect too.

Kimmel owns this one so I would bet he is not replaced as trainer anytime soon.

Tough call... either you really hope for a meltdown in the Sprint, or you hope you can outrun some other decent mid-route type horses in the Dirt Mile.

Doesn't the combination of being conditioned by John Kimmel and being sired by Unbridled's Song sentence this colt to a career of less than 10 starts with at least 2 layoffs of 6 months or more?

What color is he? If he's grey his career will almost undoubtedly be over before the Kentucky Derby.
