DRF piece on racing records

Bill Christine was the media director at Erie's old track Commodore Downs back in the day. Ended up a sports writer for the LA Times.

I happen to think Kelso's record of 5 straight Horse of the Year titles is certainly way more unlikely to be broken than Woody Stephens record of 5 training victories in the Belmont Stakes.

There are a very small number of trainers who -- year in and year out -- get all the best and pricey yearlings and the most choice selection of homebreds.

Neither Kelso nor Woody's 5 straight Belmonts will be broken. Forego with 3 HOYs came closest to Kelso 35 years ago. Since then only John, Cigar, and Curlie have won two. Five straight Belmont's by one trainer? Someone will beat the North Carolina women's 20 national championships in soccer first.

Zenyatta will be one step closer to Kelso's record after this year.

i can't imagine kelso's record would ever be in jeopardy. it's amazing to consider that he even managed that. it's a truly outstanding accomplishment.

as for woody's record-another unimaginable feat. you wouldn't think it would be breakable, but of the two it's more apt imo to occur. of course that doesn't mean it ever will be.
