Against all odds - Tough Sunday

Tough Sunday born blind, deaf defies the odds and will race in Cal Cup Derby on Jan. 24th.

"Three years ago, race horse owner and breeder Nick Alexander had a tough decision to make — letting a newborn foal die or fighting to save its life.

A difficult labor left the foal, Tough Sunday, without oxygen for more than five minutes. When he was born, he was blind, deaf and had no nursing instinct.

“As soon as we got him out, we realized he had what they call ‘dumb foal’ symptoms,” Alexander said.

The mother was also banged up pretty bad from the struggle, so they rushed both animals to the Alamo Pintado Clinic, located just five minutes down the road from Alexander’s Santa Ynez ranch.

“Within a matter of minutes, they had him hooked up to just about everything you could imagine,” he said."
