Read the Coolmore catalogue last night

The Coolmore sire catalogue came out and I read it last night. Looked scaled down from last years version and I'm wondering how badly Sheikh Mo's boycott has hurt them.

Balletto 12-13-2006 02:13 PM

You know, Cajun and I were talking about this on the phone last night...

Bernie Sams from Claiborne was talking to my dad about Bernardini and the price set at 100k. The only thing that made sense to them was that the two biggest buyers at a sale are Coolmore and the Sheik.

Since the sheik will have most of the best-bred foals by Bernardini already, where does that leave the breeders who think they're going to be guaranteed a high 6 figure foal just because of sire recognition?

So the 100k was a smart move, limiting the sales effect the boycott will have on outside breeders...

anywho, return to topic...

They got to have a lotof money to spend to print that catalogue.
Almost 80 pages long, with outstanding glossy pixs. I think they
cut out most of their Euro stallions out of this one.

I think Chapel Royal may be the bargain in that group. Hes reasonably priced and was very fast with a decent pedigree. He didnt win at a route, but his effort against Birdstone and inthe BC were both pretty good races.
You could do a lot worse than him at 7500 bucks, thats for sure.

They did, and they mispelled Sanford Stakes next to Chapel Royal as Sandford Stakes. I was kinda stunned that could get by the proofreaders.

He has ZERO pedigree, and is overpriced at $7,500. He never beat anything that could run, and has already been so over bred, that there will be many available at the sales for less than what they cost to conceive.

Balletto 12-13-2006 02:20 PM

You know, when Chapel Royal first retired they sent my dad a dvd on him. He's a great looking horse... at least on a flat screen. Anyone seen him live?

saucon17 12-13-2006 02:21 PM

I wonder if there is a race in Euro that is the Sandford Stake

oracle80 12-13-2006 02:25 PM

Giants Causeway being private is kind of weird. I'm trying to figure out the motivation of not publishing the fee. If the Sheikh wont buy them anyway, what difference does it make whether or not the fee is published?
First Samurai is already booked at 40K and Claiborne will really benefit from the Shiekh boycott on Giants Causeway with him. Hes not only a son of First Sam but Giants Causeway's only grade one winner on the dirt, and breeders don't have to worry about the "Sheikh won't buy them" problem because hes not being stood by Coolmore.

Over-bred? Probably. Beat no one? Debatable... but he's got a decent pedigree.

Ignoring the lack of appeal of his sire Montbrook and his broodmare sire, his female family is quite solid. Its one of the best Canadian families in the studbook with top stallion Night Shift, and Australian super-stallion Encosta de Lago and multiple Canadian champions to their credit.

He should be a good outcross for a lot of mares, and you can never ignore Lalun blood that close up in a pedigree, which is harder and harder to find. Would love to see some Sadler's Wells line mares go to him. Sadler's Wells is remarkable with Lalun blood.

But for the record, he's a "sit and wait" type with me. I wouldnt breed to him until he proved himself. But he's far from dull pedigree wise.

yea but you can find a positive in the breeding of almost any horse.

come on, you even got my hopes up for the 2008 debut of the Boundary-Bailar baby. We all know it's going to be running up the track in Hawthorne 10K maiden claimers by the winter of her 2yo season!

But thanks for the hope

You are really reaching there. His mother was a very mediocre $ 6250 claimer her whole career at Calder, and he is the only foal from her that had any ability whatsoever.

Absolutely not... most horses have crap families behind them. This guy just doesnt fit that bill. And for the record, I told you I didnt like Boundary but that the family wasnt "horrible". :p

One mare a family doesnt make. The whole concept of breeding with the class of the family in mind is "Family over individual".

Secretariat's dam was unplaced on the track. But that female family is as solid as it comes, and Somethingroyal turned out to be a bluehen. She's by no means the only underachiever to start a legacy in the shed because of those great genes behind her...

Hell, the GREAT La Troienne couldnt outrun a fat girl... but look at what she accomplished in the shed, all due to class of the female family. But, in La Troienne's defense, she was started in company well over her head. But regardles!!!

sumitas 12-13-2006 02:43 PM

one can never have too much La Troienne

He has a lot of similairites to Lion Heart.

Lion Heart's dam, raced for $5K claimers at Suffolk at one time. Lion Heart was also a seven figure 2-year-old in training buy off the basis of a sensational workout. I believe he sold for like $90K as a yearling the prior year.

Chapel Royal was a $1,200,000 OBS sales topper off the basis of a strong under-tack showing.

I see CR as a poor man's Lion Heart...at best.

I was at his signing party in Vegas with my internship earlier in the year. He has my respect for turning down Paris Hilton at the end of the night after she spent the whole night calling him "baby" and trying to make out with him in VIP. He's buddies with Nick Lache who's a cool character too. They helped us load all the equipment at like 5am after everyone left.
