1/22: Aqueduct ($25k C/O); Gulfstream (6th-9th)
Can simply not cash a meaningful ticket as seemingly certain Gulfstream P4 play -- live to 6 in the anchor leg -- went awry at the hands of Liz Grey's 40-1 wire job Thoth. A Malibu Moon (9% with turf starters) colt out of an un-raced Mountain Cat mare, Thoth had two nondescript main track tries where he had been beaten a combined 32 lengths coming into this lawn bow. He had no discernible grass breeding, hadn't been two turns, and had not shown speed in his first two starts, so he was certainly not an obvious candidate to wire a group of maidens with grassy pages and some notable tries in their PP's.
The $82 winner wasn't the only bulbous wire to wire surprise package of the day either, as ridiculous Most Happy Fella bested a good group of NY bred allowance foes at 45-1 at Aqueduct. In that Big A 6th, C. C. Lopez rode favored Shrimp Dancer as if he was Native Dancer, completely ignoring the dynamics of the race and failing to utilize any of his mount's tactical speed. Affable David Donk could not have been too pleased with the performance, which saw the $93 winner get away with a :48.3 half and three quarters in 1:13.4. By the time Lopez tried to engage the leader in deep stretch, he had run out of racetrack.
As had been discussed, the challenging sequence was going to be a difficult P6 to hit even without the Bill Badgett bomb, and sure enough there is a $25k carryover into a very weak So. Ozone Park card today. I had looked at the late Gulfstream action as well, and am willing to keep swinging until I can get back into a good rhythm.
