Mandy's Gold was 1-for-2 lifetime at Saratoga. She won the Honorable Miss over a fine performance by Jean-Luc Samyn on 2nd place finisher Shine Again.

Shine Again returned to defeat Mandy's Gold in the Gr 1 Ballerina next time out -- this time Shine Again got a pace setup and Saymn didn't get in her way at all. Mandy's Gold checked home 3rd. The 6/5 favorite Raging Fever finished 2nd.

The great mare Esposa was 1st or 2nd in four different Whitney Handicaps at Saratoga. She was 2nd in the Whitney to Hall of Famer Discovery twice. She was a close 2nd to Hall of Famer War Admiral and only got 5lbs from him.

Since Esposa won the Whitney in '37, only three other females have won the Whitney (Personal Ensign, Lady's Secret, and Gallorette) -- finishing first or 2nd in the race 4 years in a row is a great accomplishment.

She also won several other important Stakes at Saratoga, including other major wins over top males, and is the most accomplished female horse in the history of the track in terms of wins and placings. She even finished 3rd in the Hopeful as a 2yo, only one other filly since has had a top 3 finish in the Hopeful.

Not that Mandy's Gold isn't worthy of having a race named after her, in fact, she's probably one of the most worthy of the recent ones.

Here's a write-up on Esposa:

Think about that -- as a 5-year-old mare -- she ran 5 times in the 4-week long Saratoga meeting. She won four times, including the Whitney, Wilson, and Saratoga Handicap all against older males.

As a 6-year-old, she ran 6 times at Saratoga...but caught War Admiral four different times. Her only win was the Butler by 3 lengths in 1:50.60 -- she left Saratoga and dominated in the Hawthorne Gold Cup.

As a 4-year-old, she won the Merchants Handicap at Saratoga over the great Hall of Famer Discovery and that years Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Count Arthur. And she was 2nd in the Whitney.

As a 3-year-old, she was 2nd in the Whitney. No 3yo filly since has ever had a top 3 finish in the Whitney.

As a 2-year-old, she was 3rd in the Hopeful, only one other filly since has had a top 3 finish in the Hopeful.

Esposa also won the Remsen as a 2yo. The Remsen has been a major 2-year-old stakes race since 1904...and Esposa is the only female in history to have won it.

She was competitive racing almost exclusively against top class males every year from age 2 through age 6 -- at every distance from 6 furlongs to 13 furlongs where she beat Seabiscuit and 14 furlongs where she was 2nd to War Admiral at.

Hard to believe no track has a stakes race named after her -- let alone her home track of Saratoga where she always showed up every season to face the absolute best of the superior gender.

Why did Saratoga put this race for 3yo fillies within five days of the Prioress? Combine the two races and you would have had a full field and great wagering event..
