Default A question for Steve, Hooves, and others

Good morning guys. I have a question, one that I hope is legit--since I am new to the room. And this is for anyone posting picks for a day's card.

I've noted that when listing your picks, each race usually has 4 horses listed. In your picks Steve, they are 1.2.A.B. (Can you explain the A-B for me?)

Most often, I bet only to win, with exactas in addition to my win bet. I've not ever bet multiple tickets, and have cashed multiple race tickets now and then when played. It's not to say that cannot change though.

So, when you are showing 4 horses listed for each race are any of you backing your 1st choice, or top horse, with a flat win bet?

Its easier to go 7 of 9 when one is choosing four horses per race, but in doing so, if not backing one or the other--cannot one STILL show a loss at the end of the day? (I know I can.)

I've been doing this for a good while, but I've never given myself the luxury of posting 4 possibles per race. On other boards though, I've rarely posted picks, so I need you guys to help me here.

Thanks to each of you in advance.

Grits..

Horses 1. & 2. are thought of by me as the 2 horses most likely to win WITH THEIR ANTICIPATED ODDS FIGURED IN..

Horses A. & B. are horses that:

1.) Need to be used in exotics because they provide value..

2.) Need to be covered in exotics because they very well may be the most possible winners BUT AT LOWER ODDS THAN I CARE TO TAKE ON THEM..

3.) Options as 'win' covers or P3/P4 includes..

Note that I bet exotics almost exclusively, exactas/tri's, P3's/P4's.. So my inclination is to find 3 or 4 horses that figure to run well with the horse I like best... I will then take that #1 or #2 choice and KEY them with the others...

A $1 tri key (my #1 over #2, #A, #B and Longshot Alert horse? $12.. 1x4x3).. If I key the #1 in the second spot, it's another $12.. So I have perhaps a 6-1 shot keyed with 4 horses for $24.. If the favorite is third or out of the money, it pays $300, $400, $600..whatever...

Have to leave for the studio, but will check back to explain/discuss more later...

Note the trifecta/superfecta results in the 8th race yesterday at Gulfstream and the 5 horses used on the late P3 ticket and you'll get a quick understanding of what I try to do with my selections...
