I thought he broke the barrier DURING the year, it was on opening day? That is even more awesome because all eyes had to be on him that year

It was opening day, 1947. He went 0-3. Played first base that day and every day that year, though he mostly played at 2nd base in his career. Hit .298 and was ROTY (first year for the ROTY award).
Played 10 years and wanted to coach or manage when he retired. He got no offers. |
