Default Derby payouts

I played against Big Brown in the derby in a big way and stood to have a huge day if any one of nine horses upset him. Alas Brown delivered and my chances for a big day evaporated. However I did make one backup trifecta saver play with Big Brown on top, thinking that this would perhaps get my investment back should he win.

I was shocked when I saw what the trifecta paid. I actually ended up making a tidy profit on the saver play which is rare. The only reason this happened was because Pyro and Colonel John, 2nd and 3rd favorites ran out. But Eight Belles was the fourth favorite so getting a $3,445 trifecta when you had 2:1 over 13/1 over 27:1 seems generous.

Think about it, you could have boxed the field underneath Big Brown for $2 at a cost of $684 and received $3,445.

Take it to the super and box the field for $2 and it would have cost $11,628 but it returned $58,737.

Yeah, agree... someone in the stands said "what do you think the tri will pay" and I said the 20-5 exacta was paying $150 so maybe $1200 for $2? When it came up I almost fell off the bench, but at the same time turned to desolation when I got the news on Eight Belles.
