![]() I found out this afternoon that this tooth that has been giving me fits of late needs a root canal and then a crown. The Dentist prescribes me some good pain meds (and jack nothin was workin, aleve nothin), penicillin for the infction and I have an appointment for this Monday. Never had one, don't know what to expect during the procedure and after. He said my crown would take 2 weeks to complete and I would be fitted with a temporary crown. Anyone out their been thru a root canal?
Ok now this part. I asked to see what it would cost. She runs the sheet and it is going to cost $1,882, and I am responsible for $882 of it. Now I realize that I only pay a few dollars a week for my Dental Insurance but come on can't you help me out a little more then that? I would be more then happy to pay 25% but this seems excessive. Am I off base? |

![]() get a second opinion.
or can you get it pulled? unless of course it's right up front! have never had a root canal, but my mother said once she'd get hers pulled and get dentures instead of having one of them done.

![]() That sounds a tad excessive. I personally would go for a gold crown vs. the porcelain type - they fit better, are slightly malleable so they will correct with your bite, and look ghetto fab. I'd think 400 bucks ought to cover the crown and probably another 550-600 for the RC is more like it, but it depends where you are I guess - def get a second opinion.

![]() The worst part about any dental procedure (beside the bill after it's done) is the anticipation of pain. Sitting there with you mouth open waiting for it to hurt. I was expecting the worst when I went for my RC. But my dentist numbed me up good and made sure the novicane (or whatever he gave me) was working to the full extent untill he started the work. He explained that once he killed the nereve or took it out (really don't remember the specifics) it would pretty much be a painless procedure. And it was, but it did take a couple of visits. But, I was comfortable in the chair and it was a walk in the park.
Once you trust him or her 100% you just sit there and try to relax as much as possible. The whole key is being able to trust your dentist. I trust my dentist very much, to the point where I don't even dread going anymore. He took out an impacted wisdom tooth I had and I won't lie, it was hell. It was so bad that he called me up at home that night to see how I was feeling. But he did a tremendous job. When I heard about needing the RC, I just remembered about the wisdom tooth and realized that nothing could compare to that expierence. It wasn't even close. Just make sure you find a dentist that you like and more importantly trust. Good Luck!

![]() hate to say but afraid that figure sounds about right [even after insurance] - had one last year took two follow-up visits to make sure it fit correctly - just tell em up front want to make payments say like $200 over four months, in this economy they will definitely work with you...
theyll have it so numb, honestly you won't feel a thing but it takes a LONG time [compared to say fillings] so spend an extra $35-$40 out of pocket and get the nitrous oxide to keep your mind occupied - GOOD LUCK !! oh yeah, ask for GOLD cause they don't chip like porcelain [like on jolly ranchers] and more fun to look at anyway lol... ![]() I Have Had Root Canals Up The Ying Yang! They Suck. The Little Files They Use To Bore Through The Root, Wow. Then Your Wallet Gets Rooted Out Also. They Are Not Even Done By Most Regular Dentists Anymore, They Send U To A Specialist. If Its A Tooth Hidden In The Back Of Your Mouth And You Are Over 45, I Suggest You Just Pull It Out.

![]() I have had 6 root canals. If you go to a specialist it will be quick and easy. I agree the anticipation of pain is the real problem. Relax. I think it depends on which tooth on how soon you get over it. I've had them be pain free and I've had one that hurt for exactly 5 days and the next day it was completely pain free. You are lucky to get pain meds. My dentist won't do it. Says that tylenl is enough. Glad to see they aren't all sadists.
it is very important to take the antibiotics gotta calm that nerve down. as far as the price.. that is better than my insurance. You typically have to pay half. The price is about right too. It would be about $1,000 without the root canal. The problem with geting teeth pulled is it loosens up the ones next to the pulled tooth. You only have some many teeth try and take care of them. btw.. if you don't take care of the new cap it can go bad below the gum line. Be sure and floss. I would hate for you to have to do it all over. btw the reason everything costs so much is because of FDR compaies had to offer benefits because they couldn't pay people any more... when you aren't paying the bill you don't care how much it costs and the costs went up

![]() If they do it right, numbing, it does not hurt at all, and once done it's massive relief as they are taking out the nerve. The damn gummy gel they use to make the crown makes me choke but you'll get over that.
Number seems high, may ask to spell out what each costs. Ususally about $500 for root canel, $500 for crown. Still, nothing like a good doc vs. a bad one.
