Kubrick - The Killing
anybody ever see this movie? its an old Kubrick movie from 1956, about some guys that pull off a heist at a racetrack. I saw part of it this morning and its coming on again right now.
the ractrack scenes are hilarious as is their plot. their diversion is having a guy with a rifle shoot the favorite in the big stakes race on the far turn. just noticed that it was filmed at Bay Meadows. |

It's terrific. Kubrik's take on the 'caper' film. Sterling Hayden and many familiar character actors from the era.

That's what surprised me, to know that Kubrick had done a caper flick in his early years. Sterling Hayden was good as Johnnie and the narration gave it a Dragnet feel. Released during the age when Hitchcock ruled, I could definitely sense a Hitchcock influence.
Watched it last night back to back with 2001- A Space Odyssey. Its hard to believe those two movies came out a mere 12 years apart. |
