Who knows and who cares. You should be asking about a good horse like Brother Derek. Bob and John and Point Determined are a notch below.

PD is a plodder. I don't know what you like about him. Most of the horses you like such as Surf Cat and EC are good horses. PD is a bum.

with all those works on the grass I was hoping he was pointed here, I know Hendricks even said he was keeping an eye on who filled this race.
Sept. 3rd
Del Mar Derby (gr. II), $400,000g, 3yo, 9f (turf).

Hendricks trains BD, but wasn't that workout for Bob and John? LMAO

fair enough, it's jumbled and some of it was from a side conversation with Kevin, B&J has been working on the turf, it's 3 and up....I was just saying that Hendricks was considering it, and possibly Baffert may be too.

From ESPN 8-3-06

Brother Derek's most likely race at Del Mar is the $100,000 El Cajon Stakes at a mile on Sept. 2, but Hendricks has not ruled out the $400,000 Del Mar Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Sept. 3. Brother Derek has never run on turf.

"There is the slightest chance we might run in the Del Mar Derby," Hendricks said. "I might work him on the turf next week. Timing-wise, it comes up well. It is a Grade 2 worth $400,000. He's ahead of schedule."

The Del Mar Derby is not for 3 year olds and up. It is for 3 year olds. That's why it is a "Derby". Any time a race is called a "derby", that means it is restricted to 3 year olds.

Just saw this on DM barn notes....

Stable Notes By Gene Williams Sunday, August 27, 2006
BROTHER DEREK REMAINS ON TARGET FOR EL CAJON STAKES

Brother Derek added an exclamation point to his training regimen this morning with a sterling 5-furlong drill in 58.80 breezing as he finished preparation for his return to racing after a three-month hiatus following his fourth-place finish in the Preakness Stakes.

He has pointed for Saturday’s $100,000-added El Cajon Stakes at a mile on the main track for the past couple of weeks. “It was a very nice work,” trainer Dan Hendricks said. “He did it easy. Another horse broke in on him and it worked out very nice.” Hendricks said the “other horse” episode wasn’t planned but he said it worked out fine.

“It’s a little crowded out there during training, and sometimes a horse will break in on you,” he said. “It was fine for us.” The clockers gave these time splits on the work: first eighth in 12 seconds, 35.20 for 3 furlongs, 47 flat for the half-mile en route to the final time. “I got the last eighth in 11 and 3/5,” Hendricks said, adding, “It went just like we wanted; a nice tightener. You know, better horses work faster and that’s what he did.”

As for running in the El Cajon, Hendricks said, “I have to confirm it 100 percent with Mr. [Cecil] Pea**** that it’s the best thing to do and make sure Saturday’s race fills.” Brother Derek, who dead-heated for fourth in the Kentucky Derby with eventual Belmont Stakes winner Jazil, is also nominated to the Grade II, $400,000 Del Mar Derby on Sunday. Of that race, Hendricks said, “The Del Mar Derby is a great race and we wish we had time to run in both.”

I think they are considering the El Cajon at Del Mar. I'm not a big fan of Point Determined. He is a notch below the good 3 year olds. His bet chance is to ship around and avoid the good 3 year olds. I think Baffert knows this. The horse has been working regularly but Baffert did not run him in the Travers or the Haskell.

Did they ever try Point Determined on the turf? I wonder how he would do.

I don't think PD would run well on the turf. He just kind of runs evenly. You need to have a good burst of speed in you to compete on the turf. It's fine to come-from-behind on the turf, but you need to be able to run your final 1/8th fast. PD just isn't that kind of horse.

Richi, while I appreciate you honest opinion, I find it hard to believe that I am alone in being a fan of a certain horses that are "a notch below." While it is all subjective...I venture to guess that you are fan of a few horses that many people may feel are "a notch below"

I have 50+ horses in my DRF stable that I like to keep an eye on. That to me is part of the excitement in racing. Watching a 2YO run that not many people got a chance to see, and following him/her before the larger general public may hear of the horse. Me in particular, I enjoy watching turf races and scouting for first timers that I think may do well, or one that does well and surprises me. Im sure you, as others have many horse that you may follow. But, just because that horse does not meet your standards, no need to think that others don't enjoy watching them run.

That's what it's all about. It's about picking out horses before anyone else knows about the horse. That is how you will get a good price. For me, it's not only how I will get a price betting on them, it is also how I may be able to buy the horse for a reasonable price.

I would not knock you for picking a horse that is under the radar. That is a good thing to do. I am the first guy to predict that a horse who has never even won a stakes race, will be the next great horse. I called EC the best 3 year old grass horse in the country before he had ever run in a stakes race. We tried to buy EC, TH Approval, and Roses in May before any of them had ever won a stakes race.

It's good to pick horses before anyone else knows about them. But in this case, PD is totally the opposite. This is a horse who has always been totally overrated that everyone has always been touting. He goes off at low odds all the time and usually disappoints. He's just a very overrated horse.
