(One or two retired / out since this was released yestrday, but...) Worldwide attention on Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races 2010 One point that the list of entries for the 2010 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Races makes very clear is the extent to which the meeting has now seized the attention of the biggest players in world racing. For the first time entries have been received not just from every continent but from every one of the major owners in thoroughbred racing. If the usually overstated cliché reads ‘This reads like a Who’s Who’, it can in this case safely be modified. This is a Who’s Who of world racing. Among the 208 international entries, of which 65 are international Group One winners, the names of every great owner from Godolphin to the Yoshida family, from Juddmonte to the Aga Khan and from the Maktoums to, perhaps most significantly, the members of the Coolmore/Ballydoyle partnerships recur. America is well represented by Pam and Martin Wygod, Mr and Mrs Bert Firestone and Team Valor, Britain by such as Ballymacoll, Cheveley Park and Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, France by Ecurie Wildenstein, Wertheimer Freres and the Marquesa de Moratalla. From Australia come men instantly recognizable by their surnames: Singleton and Eales. And where the great owners go, the great horses, trainers and jockeys automatically follow. Among the horses, the names of Group One record-breaking mare Goldikova, twice winner of the Breeders’ Cup Mile and soon to bid for a record third; 2010 Arlington Million winner Debussy, owned by Princess Haya, and 2010 Japanese Triple Crown winning filly Apapane catch the eye, as do those of Yasuda Kinen winner Showa Modern, English and Irish Oaks winner Snow Fairy and Moyglare Stud’s Vase entry Profound Beauty. Aiden O’Brien’s six entries include Await The Dawn, Cape Blanco, Rip Van Winkle and Global Sprint Challenge winner-elect Starspangledbanner who is being aimed at the Mile, a distance over which he has already won at the highest level in his native Australia. Bidding to end his 17-race career, of which 10 have been victories, in a blaze of glory 2008 French Derby winner and 2009 Prince of Wales's Stakes winner Vision d’Etat returns to defend his title in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup, and Singapore’s sprint sensation Rocket Man, already a horse with a worldwide reputation, will be a focus of attention in his attempt to turn the tables on Green Birdie and Sacred Kingdom who have inflicted narrow defeats on him on his Kranji home turf. “The total number of nominations from the 19 countries and racing jurisdictions are slightly down on last season,” commented Hong Kong Jockey Club Executive Director of Racing, William A Nader. “But the overall response reflects the quality of this event and its reputation as the Turf World Championships. “There is a wonderful balance at play, with the great depth of overseas challengers from across the world taking on the best of Hong Kong’s relatively small horse population,” added Nader. “It will once again prove to be one of the world’s great racing occasions, especially with Good Ba Ba taking aim at an unprecedented feat of a fourth consecutive victory in the International Group 1 Mile. Hong Kong, as always, will feature a strong lineup of locally based talent including new names to join the familiar presence of Sacred Kingdom, Collection, Able One and other top performers." |
