Default Caleb's Posse Retired

Three Chimney's Press Release:

Caleb's Posse to Three Chimneys for 2013
07/12/2012

Robert N. Clay's Three Chimneys Farm, Everett Dobson and Don McNeill announced today that Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Caleb's Posse (Posse - Abbey's Missy, by Slewacide) has been retired from racing and will stand at Three Chimneys Farm beginning in 2013.

Caleb's Posse was a stakes winner/graded stakes performer at ages two, three and four, and was a close runner-up by only three votes for 2011 Eclipse Champion Three-Year-Old honors. Winner of the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) by a commanding four lengths, Caleb's Posse's other 2011 accomplishments included victories in the King's Bishop Stakes (G1), Amsterdam Stakes (G2), Ohio Derby (G3) and Smarty Jones Stakes in 2011.

Caleb's Posse had been campaigning at the Grade 1 level in 2012, finishing close second in the Carter Handicap (G1), Tom Fool Stakes (G2) and most recently the Metropolitan Handicap (G1). His connections had hoped his 2012 campaign would culminate this fall with a defense of his 2011 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) title.

"We discovered a non-displaced fragment in his left knee after the Met Mile," said Caleb's Posse's owners. "We were hopeful that some time off would resolve the situation, but recent radiographs have revealed that surgery to remove the chip will mean that he could not return to the racetrack this year. He has proven his brilliance on the track, and now we want to give him a chance to pass on that brilliance in the breeding shed."
Bred in Kentucky by Don McNeill, Caleb's Posse is out of the McNeill-bred and raced mare Abbey's Missy, by Slewicide, who is a three parts sister to multiple graded stakes winner and million dollar-earner Mr. Ross.

"We are thrilled that Caleb's Posse is coming to Three Chimneys," said Robert Clay. "He was a brilliant miler who traces back to La Troienne. He is a quality individual that will cross well with a variety of pedigrees. We expect him to be a very popular commercial sire."
Caleb's Posse will be available to breeders for inspection beginning next week. His stud fee will be announced in conjunction with the rest of the 2013 Three Chimneys stallion roster later this fall.

Probably only had a couple of races left, but matching with Shackleford and Hansen would have been one of the most compelling races on Breeders Cup Day.

It pains me to say it but, Hansen really needs to mover forward a lot this year before he is mentioned as competition for horses such as Shackelford and a healthy Caleb's Posse.

Sigh. One of the best milers we've seen in recent years.
