7/16: Del Mar Turf Club (Opening Day; 7th-10th)
DEL MAR
POST-SCRATCHES 7th: S/ALW, 3+, 1m (P4, P3, DD) Fight Thru making steady career progress for Miller and even with possible strong pace is one to beat; Gangnam Guy new to Dorf barn and appears a good fit at solid price; Northern Iowa a steady check-earner with this company and gets chance to attack late; Derby Glass another that fits at level and in race flow.. Most Likely: #8 Fight Thru 5-2 4th Best Value: #7 Gangnam Guy 6-1 WON ($10.40) Next Best: #5 Northern Iowa 5-1 6th Exotics Use: #2 Derby Glass 3-1 3rd 8th: Oceanside-R, 3yo, 1m-T (P3, DD) Del Mar meet opening standard didn't split into divisions but drew full field of assorted sophs, 5 of which are making surface moves. Despite the array, there are just two top candidates in Papacoolpapacool and Soul Driver. Papacoolpapacool exits Penn Mile, won by Belmont Derby next out winner Force the Pass, while Soul Driver earned 2nd career win crushing Singletary at SA at today's trip. After that pair, the pricey intrigue comes from forward-going Tried and True from Harty and Drysdale IRE-bred NA-firster Thanksgiving Day. Tried and True makes turf bow here and is beautifully made for the lawn being by Medaglia d'Oro and out of Group 3 winning Rahy mare Dearly who herself is a half sister to the talented Balletto (Timber Country). Thanksgiving Day was 10/2-3-2 in UK for small money and has hinted at talent in the mornings per Andy Harrington.. Most Likely: #10 Papacoolpapacool 5-2 5th Next Best: #11 Soul Driver 3-1 WON ($7.80) Best Value: #3 Tried and True 12-1 4th Exotics Use: #7 Thanksgiving Day 10-1 10th 9th: MSW, F&M-3+, 6f (DD) Not your typical late 3yo MDN group with some highly pedigreed types involved as well as some hot working gals with experience. Dreamologist (Tapit), sister of Fast Anna (Md'O) out of Calabrese's wonderful Dreaming of Anna, arrives for debut with series of wow works that have captivated Clocker's Corner. Wins at first asking if she runs to morning talent. Wygod homebred Sweet Promises (Bernardini) is o/o '08 BC Distaff heroine Life Is Sweet and adds blinkers while turning back and is going to provide value. $400k Midnight Belle (Bernardini) makes her 3yo debut here and the half sis of Unbridled Belle (Unbridled's Song) lures Bejarano and may be ready to fire first off the bench for Puype. Never Ends has been knocking on the door for Hollendorfer and new West Coast arrival James Graham gets a chance to make a good impression on important barn with the mount. Illuminant is 2nd/break for Mike McCarthy and just missed in 3yo debut 6/7 at SA. D' Amato has a sharp-drilling Gloryzapper making career bow, but this one may be a rallying type that needs pace up front or a little added distance. Hess' Dunkirk FTS Seaward Cottage looks like she has ability but may also need more ground. Samantha Siegel and Ron Ellis offer Send Me a Sign who appears useful on deep exotics. Very good group that should produce many players that bear watching as meet progresses.. Most Likely: #6 Dreamologist 7-2 3rd Best Value: #9 Sweet Promise 12-1 6th Next Best: #2 Never Ends 6-1 7th Exotics Use: #11 Gloryzapper 9-2 WON ($7.40) 10th:Cal-ALW/N1X, 3+, 8.5f-T (Super Hi-5) Murderously well-matched set of Cal-breds.. I second a lot of this (other than the meeting my wife on the train to Del Mar part...). Steve, I wish you would ask Hammer why Santa Anita got rid of the place pick all, it was always my favorite exotic wager, and there isn't anything similar on the menu to replace it, and the payoffs are always huge relative to the parlay. I understand it will never attract handle like the pick 4 or pick 5, but it still has its niche and many loyal followers. As far as the thin play-along following is concerned, this board has always been pre-disposed to favor east coast (esp. NYRA) tracks, as I suspect the vast majority of the members live east of the Mississippi. Not a criticism, just an observation. Total handle was over $15 million though, so someone was watching (and betting.) |

We got quite a bit of trainer notebook conversation in this week with Rick Hammerle, DRF Formulator's Mike Hogan, Rich Eng & Jay Privman and there will be more next week. In addition to the more obvious focals like Peter Miller that came up regularly, I thought Hammer's point about the smaller, more obscure outfits (incl. Arizonans like Molly Pearson, new Northern Cal visitors brought in by David Jerkens, etc.) was very well taken. I pushed betting barn guys guys like Gary Sherlock too.. Will find out about the Place Pick All. Wasn't a bet I ever tried but like the Grand Slam in NY, these wagers have their fans. That's great about Joanne introducing you to your wife.. Just heard from her this week and may have her on Fridays to do some DMR featured capping. BOL this summer!
