2/6: Gulfstream (4th-13th); Santa Anita ($40k C/O)
GULFSTREAM PARK
POST-SCRATCHES 4th: 11th Ladies' Turf Sprint, F&M-4+, 5f-T/96' (P3, DD, Hi-5) Lady Shipman likely still too much for rest of division, but it is first start back and comes with occasional quirk of a new barn.. Most Likely: #2 Lady Shipman 3-5 WON ($2.40) Best Value: #7 Catching Fireflies 10-1 8th Next Best: #6 Aquinnah 8-1 7th Exotics Use: #5 Jewel of a Cat 6-1 3rd 5th: 31st Fred Hooper (G3), 4+, 1m (P3, DD, Hi-5) With Valid absent, this event becomes that much more competitive, with 6 of 7 owning wins over the strip. (Morning Calm is an 8th runner but tries first dirt anywhere). Wildcat Red (11/5-4-1 at GP) can control pace from the bell and whomever expects to have a say will need to stay within striking range. Ami's Flatter was stunning in 4yo debut 1/13 and return to that will be hard to deny, but also poised to regress off career best. Velazquez not typically aggressive but may need to gain position from rail. Tommy Macho can lay close but better be ready to fire off brief break. Just Call Kenny may be a fun price use here given proximity to cast of the Donn back in December and Grande Shores was strong in the Hal's Hope as well as 2nd a zot to Valid in this a year ago. Tough calls in all slots.. Most Likely: #3 Tommy Macho 2-1 WON ($9.00) Best Value: #5 Grande Shores 12-1 3rd Next Best: #6 Wildcat Red 5-2 7th Exotics Use: #8 Just Call Kenny 15-1 5th 6th: 73rd Suwannee River (G3), F&M4+, 9f-T/96' (P3, DD, Hi-5) Best Value: #8 A Little Bit Sassy 6-1 8th Next Best: #5 Light in Paris 4-1 4th-DH Exotics Use: #4 Rainha Da Bateria 8-1 2nd Super Add: #2 E B Ryder 10-1 6th 7th: MSW, 3yo, 6f (P3, DD, Hi-5) A number of well bred types involved with Good Genes, full brother of Awesome Feather, working nicely for return to track.. Turf rail at 0', so inside gets edge. Beantown Saint (8-1) could float up and was improving as the winter neared. Got light freshening and a tightener across state.. As discussed with Privman, Haskin & Hammer on Weekend Preview, plenty of intrigue lined up against Los Al Futurity hero Mor Spirit. Baffert told me Friday that while confident in Eskendereya colt long term, may be vulnerable in this particular spot. Stretchout sprinters I Will Score and Uncle Lino test distance capabilities here while Dressed in Hermes and Path of David try dirt again. Do not ignore Guillot's talented MDN Laoban who may not win but will boost exotics.. GP SCR/CHG'S
Here is the full roster of SCR for the 13-race Donn Day card that starts at noon Eastern, with the latest updates: R1-(15); R2-(10, 14, 15, 16); R3-(11); R4-(9); R8-(15, 16); R9-(12, 13); R10-(14, 15); R11-(12). With 40 MTP for the opener, the main track is sealed because a fairly heavy shower came through at about 10:45. However, it's still listed as fast, and I'd guess it will be opened (as opposed to remaining sealed) for the first. Either way, it should be a dry track before too long. It's another relatively chilly day here, with high temps only expected to reach into the low 70s.
