I got a problem. Who can help?
Now that I've gotten older and much slower it's becoming clear I need a lifestyle change. I'm not the nose to the grindstone type either and have no self help in me at all. I got diabeties, high blood pressure and over weight.(5'11'' 240 lbs) I'm even going to the extreme of thinking of taking steriods to at least add some muscle to this flabby body of mine. I liked to lift weights back in the day but jogging and walking kill these 3 time operated on knees I've gotten from football. How bad are these drugs out there anyone taken them before? Maybe I need to seek a doctors advivce but they all say the same thing diet and exercise. Maybe I'm just nutts who knows?

You are not that far overweight where you cant be helped with simple changes in diet and a major commitment to exercise. But if you are not willing to work hard at the exercise, you can forget about losing the weight.
Like Pgard says, if your knees cant take jogging and running, start with speed walking. You need to do a lot more of this than you would if you could run. Wont burn as many calories but if you can committ to an hour a day, you can accomplish what you need to. Start lifting weights 3-4 times a week, mainly concentrating on the bigger body parts like back, chest and shoulders. Walking and maybe eventually some light jogging will take care of your legs. You dont need a gym, just go out and get yourslef an adjustable bench and 4-5 sets of dumbells, maybe intervals of 20-30-40-50-60 to start. Eat more meals with less calories in them. 5-6 times a day would be ideal and nothing after 5pm since you are not in the kind of shape where your body will burn calories in your sleep. |

people are very much creatures of habit and of routine. you need to change yours. easier said than done? after a couple of weeks, whatever new routine you create for yourself will BE your routine.
first, go back to the doctor and tell him the vague 'diet and exercise' isn't what you need to hear. he can proscribe a proper diet, or lead you in the right direction. walking a few minutes several times a day might be better for you rather than trying to stuff a larger block into one part of your day. don't go 0-60 right away, start doing more about 3 times a week. work your way into a daily routine. eat on a smaller plate-sounds funny, but that way your plate is full-but it takes less to make it so. eat slowly, it takes time for your brain to realize belly is full-ever eat and about half an hour later you're miserable because you over-ate? drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol, sugar and refined carbs such as bleached flour. whole grain is the way to go. have clear soup such as chicken or vegetable broth as an appetizer. avoid sodas and sweets. there are a lot of sugar-free foods out there, they're very good. as for fat free-avoid, as the fat is replaced with sugar. also, your body should get a minimum of 20g of fat a day. also, avoid trans fats at all costs! they are incredibly bad for you. also, eat five smaller meals a day. always eat a light breakfast. and of course, if and when you eat something you shouldn't, don't just quit. you will have moments of weakness. don't chalk it up as a complete failure and give up.

#1 Walking: Any activity you can do with the biggest muscles(the legs) in your body is good. They burn a heck of a lot of sugar. #2 Eat and drink, but not after 7 pm if you go to bed an 10 or 11 pm. No eating or drinking 3 to 4 hours before your bedtime. Eat a big breakfast, big lunch, small dinner and then cold water after that if you get hungry. Baby steps... I think this is doable. If the above work somewhat in getting rid of some excess weight, then maybe some other minor changes that will allow you to stay consistent, after some confidence is built if you start feeling better. Nothing will happen quickly if you want a true change that lasts. The next exercise I would do would be pool running if you have access. No pain on the knees but a great workout. I used to do this when I was injured from running. And not swimming, its good for you, but it will not utilize the large muscles of the legs in a manner that burns up that sugar and fat like pool running. If you can get to this stage, a large amount of weight will come off and the blood sugar levels will drop... and you probably will be able to keep eating and drinking if you do this exercise enough. I am very leery about all the new stuff coming out for weight loss. I would really wait to see what the true effects are by talking to others that try these. |

Well I'm glad to report that my BP is running around 120/70. Great I said then the doctor's nurse said "have you been taking your dibeties RX?" I'm embarrassed to say what my number was at the time. 538 that's right just about straight sugar running thru my veines. I'm quiting Coke, beer and the sweets right now. I told the wife to keep the pop hot so I won't be tempted to drink one and only put 1 or 2 in there with alot of stuff around it she can bust my when I go for one. I need to go onto a diet so any help on the what's and what not's to eat. Thanks buddies.

Packer: you are right...you're just about mainlining sugar!! Forget about having warm pop...get the stuff out of the house. Blood sugar @538 is "blackout" time. Both you and the Mrs need to tackle this together. You've said before that you haven't had the willpower to lose the weight and keep on a program..if you have Good insurance...you should check out the Kobi-pouch or the "Lap Band procedure....not gastric bypass(too many risks/mortality rate) Lap Band is minimally-invasive. You are way too young to have these health challenges.....nip it now and live to be a ripe old age! PM me if you want to,Bud! Prayers for you,too Timm

GET TREATMENT NOW. Sugars of 500 are associated with increase risk of blindness, amputation and kidney failure. Weight loss, diet and exercise will lower the amount of meds you need but with levels of glucoses of 500 needs medicine. You need to get your cholesterol checked and if your LDL is greater than 70 you need that treated to. Good Luck

first, no sodas in the house. it's doable, we don't ever have that stuff around.
no prepackaged stuff (if it's heat and eat, throw it out!) full of preservatives and such, very bad for you. go all fresh, or frozen veggies. cut transfats. read all labels on all products--i heard this on the radio the other day--if the first four ingredients on the label are a sugar-throw it out. too much sugar for you. use whole grains, brown rice, no bleached flour or white rice. whole wheat pasta. i found a web site (hate to sound like a commercial) but it's call net-rition dot com. lots of sugar free products on there, but then again, you can find a lot of sugar free in the grocery store any more. basically, eat like a caveman! and of course cookies and cakes didn't exist. berries, especially strawberries are a better fruit choice. they're higher in fiber. you have to change your lifestyle, not just go on a diet. it'll take some time, but you have to give yourself a new routine. once you get used to it, it'll get easier.
