TEOFILO FEARS LEAD TO GUINEAS CHAOS By PA Sport Staff A host of bookmakers suspended betting on the 2000 Guineas on Monday afternoon following rumours concerning the participation of long-time ante-post favourite Teofilo. Jim Bolger's son of Galileo is unbeaten in five starts, including two victories at the highest level. But his price began to drift on Betfair and by 4.10pm he had been displaced at the head of the market by Peter Chapple-Hyam's Dutch Art. Meanwhile a host of fixed-odds layers, including Guineas sponsors Stan James, suspended their markets. By 4.50pm confidence had apparently returned on Betfair and Tefilo was again trading as clear favourite. Coral's Simon Clare said his firm had seen a deluge of money for all the other leading fancies. "People are coming on to back everything else in the race and in the space of 40 minutes we decided we had to pull the plug," he explained. "In our experience, something is amiss. "It would be a another major blow for ante-post punters who have already seen Holy Roman Emperor carted off to stud. "When that happened, their one consolation was that Teofilo was still heading for the race, but that now looks doubtful. from setanta sports Jim Bolger has brought the speculation regarding Teofilo to an end by confirming that the colt has suffered a training setback but remains on course for month's Stan James 2000 Guineas. On Monday betting was suspended on the opening Classic of the season after rumours began to circulate regarding the wellbeing of the ante-post favourite. The reports prompted punters to move for his main Newmarket rivals, including Dutch Art Following the lack of comment from the Bolger camp betting remained suspended overnight with most of the major bookmaking firms, with the exception of Ladbrokes. He was, however, reinstated as the 5-4 favourite when trading reopened on Tuesday morning. Prior to the betting activity Bolger had reported his star to be on course for Newmarket, but issued a statement on Tuesday confirming reports that the unbeaten son of Galileo had, indeed, suffered a setback. "Teofilo has had a training setback. When trotted yesterday afternoon he showed slight discomfort." the statement read. "As a result, his training will be restricted to walking and swimming for one week. "Otherwise, he is fit and well and on target for his 2000 Guineas tilt on May 5. "A further statement on his condition will be issued early next week."
