Default How much time will you spend capping the Derby

As the clock clicks down to Derby day, what would you say will be the total time you will spend capping, reviewing races, and analyizing the Derby? (Not including looking back at the form after the race to confirm you screwed up by forgetting a fine point that would have won you big $$$$$ if you would have just........)

I think I'll spend somewhere aroun 5-6 hours.

two days

the day I get the PP's and the day of the derby.

One to find the contenders
and then on Derby day to find the track bias

2-3 hours before Derby Day. Then as you mentioned, making adjustments based on the track, weather, et. all on Saturday.

Spent enough already! After the post draw on the Wednesday before...I will have made up my mind who I've picked.
Now, from a "wagering" standpoint...that's a different story.

I used to think this way too. But from a handicapping perspective....it actually doesn't make a lot of sense. The Derby offers the best opportunity for a good handicapper to make money all year because of the size of the field and the amount of money that goes into the pools from people who don't have a clue.
I will start handicapping it the day before.....and do a bit more on DerbyDay itself. All together it will probably take me somewhere in the neighborhood of eight hours. That is a bit longer than I spend on most races!!
And they are among my favorite eight hours of the entire year.

I started capping when CQ and Cobalt blue won there Maiden races. They were the first two that I thought were the real deal. I agreed with Oras evaluation of CQ. After CBs maiden win most posters here felt he was below the best out west, I actually watch 2yr old races with an eye for the roses.

I think with any stakes race of this caliber you already know so much about the entrants that the bulk of your capping is done by the time post positions are drawn.

I like to generally look at the contenders, watch some video of them. Pretty much general entertainment. If you add it up, about 4-5 hours.

10/12 hours handicapping. An hour to digest posts and how to bet. Does watching The Works count?

I honestly have never understood why people spend so much time capping this race for this sole reason -

With the field size being what it is, and the other "issues" that occur such as post position draw, traffic and troubled trips etc etc I feel that this is a race to draw back and not spend as much time and money on. I think a lot of people get the "Derby Fever" and just unload on this race when the money is dancing in the undercard. They unload their cash cause it is The Derby when they might stand a much, much better chance laying the wood to that
54,000AlwN2W next weekend.

I had this conversation yesterday with a seasoned veteran of the windows wars betin these animals, he said the 2 hardest days in racing for a capper are the The Derby and Breeders Cup.

I think folks like the challenge. To some, it's like the biggest stage for a handicapper, the proving ground for true prowess. Obviously, that's a little ridiculous, as luck is an even bigger part of this race than other races, but it's the allure of the huge event. It's why people are drawn to "guaranteed pool" multirace exotics. One can make just as much money, if not more, playing in pools that aren't "guaranteed," but it's the challenge of beating a larger amount of players.

I'm guilty. It's just one of those days where I have to play -- though I have found that the undercard is ripe for wagering that day.

At the same time, I'll be playing into the pick-4 pool ending in the Derby, there's something about potentially being live to the Derby in a pick-4 wager that's irresistible.

What you are saying is absolutely true. There IS the challenge of hitting on the 2 biggest days in racing. The payouts are always huge, especially on the exotics. Do I do well on these days? Hardly ever. Maybe 4 good days in the last 10 years. But every trainer is trying to win these races... they're not using the races for preps (unlike some races, that you hear about after the race... Argh!). So these races are about as honest as you're going to find.
