Hala Bek "out for the foreseeable future"

HALA BEK, Britain’s highest-ranking contender in betting on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, is "out for the foreseeable future", according to trainer Michael Jarvis.

The twice-raced colt, so unlucky when a close fourth to Sir Percy in the Vodafone Derby, is still in the midst of the throat infection which kept him out of last Sunday's Irish Derby.

“The problem that kept him out of the Irish Derby persists and he is out for the foreseeable future. We will try to get him back for an autumn campaign," Jarvis said on Sunday, "but he is still full of mucus, which is affecting his ability to gallop."

Jarvis cannot make specific plans for Hala Bek at present until he knows when the colt will return to full health. If his schedule is disrupted much further, it will obviously be difficult to prepare him for a race like the Arc, with scant opportunity for the requisite seasoning.

Given Hala Bek's unfulfilled talent, and the fact that he did not race as a juvenile, it would seem very likely that we will see him again next year, at which point speculation may raise as to whether the Ahmed Al Maktoum-owned colt will be turned over to the Godolphin operation. A more immediate impact of Hala Bek's setback is his absence from races such as the King George and the Juddmonte International Stakes.

Few horses of his inexperience have figured so prominently at Epsom, and he would clearly have been a major player.

Hala Bek will thus remain one of the season's greatest enigmas for now. In April, he burst onto the scene with an impressive defeat of black-type performers Dragon Dancer and Snoqualmie Boy before confirming everything that his trainer had said about him with a terrific performance in the Epsom Classic. But for veering badly right inside the final furlong, the son of Halling would likely have lifted the prize.

Hala Bek's illness has hardly curtailed another solid campaign for Jarvis.
Victories for Hinterland and Consular in valuable handicaps at Sandown and Haydock on Saturday brought his total to 31 winners this season, with well over half a million pounds in prize-money on the board.

Wow, I just noticed this...Thanks, MMSC!!!

I loved this horse's 4th in the Eng. Darby....really thought he was best that day and that he would be a nice bet-back prospect in his next start with the fact that he was off the board in that race....have to wait now...would have loved to wager on him in the Irish Darby, but oh well....I can wait...

HALA BEK has resumed light training and plansfor a resumption of his career should be known early next month.

The Halling colt has been sidelined since finishing fourth to Sir Percy in the Vodafone Derby, in which he was beaten in a four-way photograph after veering badly right in the closing stages on only his second start in public.

Hala Bek suffered a throat infection afterwards, which denied him the opportunity to take his place in the Irish Derby, but connections appear hopeful that he can pursue an autumn campaign.

Trainer Michael Jarvis said: “Hala Bek has had a throat operation and started cantering again last week. It is too early to be talking about targets but we should know more in a month’s time." Olympian Odyssey, who finished third in the 2,000 Guineas before picking up a minor leg problem when 12th in the Prix du Jockey-Club, has returned to light exercise, with the Champion Stakes at Newmarket his end-of-season objective.

Charlie Hills, son and assistant to trainer Barry, said of Bill Gredley's colt: "He sustained a small hairline fracture on the inside of a knee and needed a bit of rest and recuperation. He's back in full work now after a break at Mr Gredley's stud. He looks well and is moving good in his cantering paces.

"The aim is the Champion Stakes, which dad has won with Storming Home and Haafhd. Whatever happens, Olympian Odyssey will make a lovely horse next year."

Hala Bek won't return this season

HALA BEK, a close but unlucky fourth behind Sir Percy in the Vodafone Derby, will not run again this season.
He looked to have a winning chance in the Epsom Classic only to swerve badly right in the closing stages on what was just his second start in public.

He was then being prepared for the Budweiser Irish Derby only to be ruled out of the Curragh Classic with a throat infection.
The son of Halling had recovered from the setback and was back cantering in Newmarket last month with connections considering a possible tilt at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

But trainer Michael Jarvis said: "He won't run again this year. We've run out of time and things are just not quite right."

Darn...not good news, but I appreacite the update, MMSC!...Hopefully, he'll be a good 4YO next seaon...

Epilogue..... he's been removed from the Jarvis yard.
