Default RIP Nashoba's Key

I just got some terrible news. Nashoba's Key died in a freak accident this morning at Hollywood Park. She was in her outdoor pen and she was a little excited and kicked the fence. She got her leg stuck in the fence and broke it badly. They had to put her down.

Isn't there anybody else that is asking a few more questions about this one....was there some kind of unusal circumstance that caused this?

Obviously my heartfelt prayers to her connections for their loss...

I really don't know. I still don't know exactly what happened. I was told that she got her leg caught in the fence. But the articles I read say that she simply kicked it. Either way, I don't know if there would have been any way to prevent it. I think it was probably just a freak accident. If something scares a horse and they get excited, they can hurt themselves very badly.

As a long time horse owner I can tell you from experience that there has never been a fence made that is 100% horse-safe. I've had all kinds of fencing over the years...board, poly-coated wire, polymer vinyl, woven wire, electric. Most of the time when a horse tangles with a fence, the horse loses. She was probably in one of those galvanized portable corrals. They are perfectly safe 99% of the time. I once had a horse who was in one of those. He kicked up, got his hind legs up high, got a back shoe hooked over the top rail and was stuck hanging there until we could get his shoe off. Luckily he had enough sense not to struggle or it could have been real ugly. I'm fencing my new place with Centaur polymer vinyl fence. It's about as horse-friendly as you can get, and I've still had 2 horse vs. fence episodes in the past year. I keep saying I'm going to develop some kind of fence made out of mattresses. Maybe I could call it "Cushion-Fence"?

Anyway, without even knowing the details I can see how it happened. My condolences to the connections on the loss of a fine, fine horse.
