Default Wagner to Red Sox

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...sox/index.html

Good move by Boston to shore up bullpen and potentially get better not only this year but in the future. Claimed Wagner on waivers, worked out a deal with him and Mets to waive no-trade clause, agreed not to pick up his $8 million dollar option and if they offer him arbitration (which they will because he will turn them down to go somewhere else to close again) they are entitled to draft picks for losing him. All this for middling prospects and a month and a half of salary.

No clue in Philly. Only thing I remember with the Mets was when he got pissed off the one day when the media was interviewing him after a 1-0 loss in which he didn't even play cause his teammates all ducked out to avoid the media.

before the trade i thought this was another sitcking point? on espn i read he didn't want them to pick up his option and didn't want them to send him to arbitration, thus diriving up his price for another potential team next year.

Oh they will offer him arbitration whether he likes it or not. Since he missed a lot of last year and this year he may not even be a type A. I think it is based on the previous three years.

Here is a question though? Who would possibly give up a first or second round pick in order to sign Billy Wagner next year? Allowing the Sox to offer him arbitration could be free agency suicide. Juan Cruz could only get 2 years - $6 million last offseason cause as a Type A free agent no one was willing to surrender a pick and pay him anymore than that.
