Default the new capper at S.A. is...

ARCADIA, Calif. (Aug. 10, 2009) - Santa Anita President Ron Charles announced today that HRTV anchor/analyst Jon White has been named as Santa Anita's new morning line maker, replacing the recently retired Jeff Tufts, who served in that position from 1974 through this past April. White's appointment is effective with Oak Tree's opening on Sept. 30.

There goes the morning line. Might as well pick numbers out of a hat.

Regardless of what you think about his personal handicapping ability, he's more than qualified to estimate the public's take on a race. He will do just fine.

although we have not got to this point yet...

if mr. white is the morning line capper, doesn't that affect his handicap analysis sheets that he posts the day of the races?

How can he make a horse the favorite in the morning line and then pick another horse to win the race?

I think this would hold true for all morning line makers who also do analysis for the days race card. (ex: ed burgart at losal)

It's not possible for him to make the morning line and pick a horse other than the morning line favorite? The morning line is meant to be an approximation of how the public is going to bet. He can think that a certain horse is going to be the favorite and think that a completely different horse is going to win.

Eric Donovan does the morning lines in NY and is often on the handicapping show Talking Horses. It's not really that much of a conflict of interest for most people. Who really cares? Does anybody really use the morning lines as a handicapping tool, and if you bet what the public handicappers give out, you are taking away by far the best part of betting on horses...doing the work yourself.

The morning line is very important if you are looking for value in multi-race bets. If you can find a horse on the ML that is 8-1, 12-1 and will be for certain in the 5-2 to 4-1 range. You will get huge value if play a Pick 3 or P4 to that horse. There is usually at least one on every card, even for a really good linemaker like Eric Donavan or Mike Battaglia in KY.

thank god i still have 10 years to go before i get it.

here is a nice definition:
MORNING LINES- The morning line is established by the track's handicapper and reflects what he
feels will be the final odds at the start of each race as established by the wagering public. The
morning line does not necessarily reflect his predictions as to the outcome of the race.

Did they name this program "Re-Run" in honor of Fred Berry?

You couldn't be more incorrect. There isn't a more qualified or dedicated candidate for the job than Jon White.

This establishes that you don't understand what the ML is, how it is established, what it reflects or why Jon White can make the line accurately AND write the Sanita Anita program handicapping notes.

Damn it, I wrote a long response to your original harsher reply and I was logged out before I got to hit reply. Now I have to do it again.

First of all I meant no disrespect to Jon White. In fact what I like most is his work on Inside Information and I never miss an episode. He has a gentle demeanor and delivery and I appreciate that he is involved with doing stories about horse racing history as well as handicapping. My “crack” was meant to taken as a light hearted statement, not a personal attack on Mr. White. Have you ever seen the morning line at a track like Yavapi? Zoinks!

As far as the ML goes, I would appreciate any explanation on how it is established. I love to learn new things. I would also like to see tracks list who their ML handicappers are so I have some idea as to who is making these odds.

I am not embarrassed to be a novice because everyone is a novice at some point. As inexperienced as I am I do understand how hard it is to pick a winner. I know that most dedicated handicappers don’t even look at the morning line. They do their own analysis
and can spend hours putting their tickets together. I have nothing but respect for guys like Dave Lifkin, Jeff Seigel and Les Onaka who try hard to pick winners. I get it.

Unfortunately for shlubs like me who love racing but work 10 hours a day we don’t have that luxury. Mostly what I see at the track is people using other picks from the newspaper, the track program or some other tip sheet off of the internet. For right or wrong, we put our faith (and money) in these picks. I would estimate that most of the people placing bets are relying on someone else’s opinion.

I watch hours and hours of racing everyday when I get home but I am probably not the stereo-typical racing fan. As you can tell I don’t follow horse racing because of gambling because there are no winners in gambling. I love horse racing because I care about the horses and the sport itself. I find most people who attend and work at racetracks to be a breed apart from others. They are kind and are willing to let people like me get involved with the sport beyond gambling. There are a lot of good people who dedicate their lives to the other side of the sport like charities, the Backstretch program and Rerun who get very little notice for the hard work that they do.

Anyway I don’t mind getting tasered by you because I know you are one of the good people I referred to above.

I’m going to the deli to buy the Daily News now. I’m way behind on today’s “handicapping”.
