Jackson Bend Leads Cast for Festival of the Sun at Calder
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Oct. 12, 2009) – Jacks or Better Farms’ homebred 2-year-old colt Jackson Bend is the clear leader of his division this season at Calder Race Course, and his bid for a sweep of the three ‘open’ divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes in the $400,000 In Reality finale will be among the highlights of the track’s showcase $1.225 million Festival of the Sun program on Saturday. Regular jockey Jeffrey Sanchez rides Jackson Bend for trainer Stanley Gold in the 28th edition of the In Reality at 1 1/16 miles, facing seven rivals as he bids to become the seventh horse to win the race after previously capturing the Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions of the FSS series, a feat most recently accomplished last year by Big Drama. A chestnut son of freshman stallion Hear No Evil, Jackson Bend has won his last four starts after a runner-up debut here on May 9. In his third start before the FSS series began, he won the $100,000 Frank Gomez Memorial on Summit of Speed day here on July 11 by a half-length over D’Funnybone. The latter was subsequently sold privately and has won the Saratoga Special (G2) and Belmont Futurity (G2) since then. Jackson Bend will no doubt be the favorite in the In Reality as he gets his first test around two turns, but J D Farm’s homebred Bim Bam will attract his share of support after winning the $75,000 Foolish Pleasure Stakes last out on Sept. 26 by 2 ½ lengths going one mile and 70 yards and appearing to appreciate the longer distance. Jockey Eibar Coa gets aboard Bim Bam for trainer David Brownlee, who developed J D Farm’s Wise Answer to win the 2007 In Reality by 10 lengths. Bim Bam is a son of Deputy Wild Cat and finished third behind Jackson Bend in both the six-furlong Dr. Fager and seven-furlong Affirmed. There will be one new player in the In Reality as owner-trainer Roger Laurin’s Florida homebred Concert Stage has shipped in from Woodbine in Canada where he finished fourth last out in an ‘a other than’ allowance going two turns in his fifth start over the synthetic Polytrack surface on Sept. 18. Jockey Luis Saez picks up the mount on the son of Concerto. Completing the field for the In Reality are What a Prince, Thank U Philippe, Wave Me By, Christopher’simage and Allez Reef. Joanie’s Catch a Contender in Wide-Open for My Dear Girl Rose Family Stable’s homebred Joanie’s Catch makes her 10th career start in the $400,000 My Dear Girl Division finale of the FSS at 1 1/16 miles with jockey Daniel Coa to ride for trainer Barry Rose, and she appears to have gotten her act together at the right time. The daughter of First Tour showed ability early-on, but had problems leaving the starting gate that cost her in several races, most notably when she ‘dwelt’ at the start and finished sixth in the Susan’s Girl Division of the FSS. She had broken a step slow in her previous appearance in the Desert Vixen, but rallied to finish a good second in that six-furlong test, beaten less than a length. After the Susan’s Girl on Aug. 29, Rose concentrated on her gate schooling and Joanie’s Catch passed a couple of tests with honors winning the $75,000 Brave Raj Stakes last out on Sept. 26 after breaking smoothly with the field and drawing clear in the stretch to score by 4 ½ lengths going one mile and 70 yards in her first start around two turns. Team Valor International and Gary Barber’s Winsockie is an intriguing prospect with regular partner Kristi Chapman in the saddle after breaking her maiden last out by 4 ½ lengths going a mile on turf on Sept. 27. The daughter of Trippi finished second in her debut on Aug. 8 and third in the Susan’s Girl on Aug. 29 in two previous starts for trainer Marty Wolfson, who won the 2003 My Dear Girl with Chatter Chatter. The big question mark in the My Dear Girl will be Ruben Valdes’ Australis Princess shipping in from New York for trainer Gary Contessa and to be ridden by Javier Santiago. The daughter of Werblin broke her maiden going 1 1/16 miles on turf last out at Belmont Park on Oct. 8 after several good tries without winning in sprints at Belmont and Saratoga. Completing the field of seven are Sweet Enticement, Tillie the Tigress, Sweetlalabye and Primal Baby. Grand Cash & Sal the Barber Clash in Calder Derby Trainer Dave Vivian sent out Soldier’s Dancer to win the Calder Derby (G3) in 2007 and trainer Christophe Clement won the 2008 edition of the 1 1/8 miles turf test with Sporting Art when the race was run in the spring, and those two veteran horsemen will have the favorites in Saturday’s renewal of the $100,000 event. Clement ships Lewis Schaffel’s Kentucky homebred Sal the Barber in from New York with jockey Eddie Castro on hand to ride after finishing a close-up fifth as the favorite last out in the Saranac Stakes (G3) at Saratoga on Sept. 6. The son of Alphabet Soup won an overnight stakes on turf at Belmont Park in early July and finished a strong second in the Hall of Fame Stakes (G2) at the Spa in his two previous starts. Vivian saddles Douglas Gibson’s Grand Cash in the field of 10 3-year-olds with jockey Eduardo Nunez to ride. The son of Belong to Me put together a string of good performances over the course this summer, winning the Lord Juban and American Dreamer overnight stakes with a narrow loss when second by a head in the Donthelumbertrader in between. Completing the field of 10 are Stately Character, Livingston Street, Scorbit, Just Like Biscuit, Quiet Emarati, Regis, Pound Foolish and Temo’s Dream. Motovato Likely Choice in ‘Win and You’re In’ Spend a Buck The $100,000 Spend a Buck Handicap (G3) for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on the main track has been designated this year as a “Win and You’re In’ test for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) to be run three weeks later at Santa Anita on Sat., Nov. 7. Trainer Marty Wolfson saddled Edmund Gann’s It’s a Bird to capture the Spend a Buck last year and appears to have the solid favorite in Saturday’s renewal with Gann’s 4-year-old Motovato, a winner of three of four starts at the meet and jockey Eddie Castro aboard in a field of 12. Motovato is a son of Proud Citizen that suffered his only loss over the Calder track when runner-up to ill-fated Finallymadeit in the Memorial Day Handicap (G3). In his next start, Motovato romped home a 5 ¼ lengths winner of the Primal overnight stakes on June 27 and comes into the Spend a Buck after an even try finishing fifth in the $250,000 Presque Isle Mile run over the synthetic Tapeta surface on Sept. 13. Motovato’s biggest threat may come from Quantum Racing Team’s 4-year-old gelding Mambo Meister with leading Calder rider Manoel Cruz aboard for trainer Phil Gleaves. The versatile son of King Cugat returns to the main track after making his last four starts in turf stakes. Mambo Meister made several road trips this summer, finishing a game second in the Fourstardave Handicap (G2) at Saratoga in early August and a close-up fourth last out in the Red Bank Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park on Sept. 6. He has won several good races over the main track here, including the Big Bubble overnight in mid-May. Completing the field for the Spend a Buck are Imawildandcrazyguy, Temo’s Dream (also entered in Calder Derby), Lady Shatzi, Dream Maestro, Hal’s My Hope, Hey Byrn, Cinnamon Road, Pechito, Stately Character and Colonial Causeway. Providanza Makes American Debut in Calder Oaks Trainer Christophe Clement shipped Sal the Barber from New York for the Calder Derby and he had company with Ramona Bass’ French-bred filly Providanza along for the ride ahead of her American debut in the $75,000 Calder Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on turf with jockey Eibar Coa to ride. Providanza won two of six starts in France to begin her career, most recently finishing seventh in a Group 3 stakes at Deauville on Aug. 13, although beaten only 4 ½ lengths by the winner. The daughter of Okawango ran well to be fourth in the Prix Chloe (G3) at Chantilly in early July when beaten only a length for it all. Elite Racing Company’s Royal Card will be well-backed with jockey Eddie Castro to ride for trainer Marty Wolfson, despite the fact that she will be making her turf debut. The daughter of Chapel Royal just missed when second by a nose last out as the favorite in the Judy’s Red Shoes Stakes on Sept. 26 after that race was forced off turf after a runner-up effort in the $250,000 Charles Town Oaks in West Virginia on Aug. 15. Completing the field of 10 3-year-old fillies for the Calder Oaks are One Proud Lady, Bob’s Jawbreaker, Fire Water, Proud Osceola, Chary, Asiatic Pearl, Score Boyera and Hopeful Image. Birdonthewire & Cassidy Complete Festival Stakes Line-Up Rounding out the menu of seven stakes on Saturday’s 13-race program are renewals of the $75,000 Birdonthewire Stakes and $75,000 Cassidy Stakes for 2-year-olds at 5 ½ furlongs, the latter restricted to fillies. Farnsworth Stables and Kramer Stables’ Mr. Green looms a short-priced favorite in the Birdonthewire for trainer Marty Wolfson with jockey Eddie Castro getting the mount in a field of nine. The son of Proud Accolade comes off of a sharp 3 ¾ lengths victory in a six-furlong allowance on Sept. 19 after solid runner-up efforts behind Jackson Bend in the Dr. Fager and Affirmed. A field of 11 was drawn for the Cassidy Stakes and Angel Quitroz’ Rosebud’s Ridge will be among the choices in a wide-op field of 11 with Manoel Cruz aboard for trainer Herman Wilensky. The daughter of Tiger Ridge was a wire-to-wire upset winner of the Susan’s Girl Division of the FSS and returns to a sprint distance after tiring to 11th of 12 trying two turns last out on Sept. 26.
