Default 3/27: Santa Anita ($101k C/O); Sunland Park (8th-12th)

Considering the breadth of the action Saturday, it didn't turn out to be a particularly exciting day of racing. The Dubai World Cup was highly formful and ended with a heartening victory for Japan, and the Derby Trail races while interesting, hardly seem likely to offer much impact on the First Saturday in May. My wagering experience was up/down in/out all morning and afternoon, with some modest P3 success and a few isolated bingos. Had the obvious winners at Meydan and the P3's up until Victoire Pisa, (who Dick Powell pointed ATR listeners toward Friday), swiped the $10,000,000 feature.

The day's highlights on the domestic front came from some personal favorites, as $12.60 top tab Rahy's Attorney keyed the cold Superfecta in the Pan American, while wonderous NY-bred R Betty Graybull turned the upset trick on 3-5 Quiet Giant in the 140th edition of Aqueduct's Ladies H. Swift Warrior was a good find in the Rushaway as he strung out the group for a $103 tri and $466 Super. Hope you did well! Big Santa Anita carryover and the odd Sunland Park Derby card are Sunday's focus...

After Saturday's mediocre Derby Trail preps, it's hard to be eager about what this quirky sideshow might produce. But, Team Stonestreet chooses this for Astrology's return, and there are a few in here that border on breakthrough territory, so it's certainly an important enough undertaking with $480k, $160k and $80k available for the top three finishers.

The undertone of the race is clearly the sets of connections with multiple horses involved here or elsewhere on the road to Louisville. The Hall-Breen dynamo, fresh off their Louisiana Derby score with Pants on Fire, are on hand with two more of their sophomore prospects in Ruler on Ice and Nacho Saint. Jinks Fires, plugging along back towards his Churchill base with Archarcharch already, offers a usable 20-1 longshot in Supreme Ruler.

Steve Asmussen assaulted the entry box with the aforementioned Astrology and Borderland Derby winner Fusa Code, while Jeff Bonde, a week removed from Sway Away's swoon in the Rebel, tries Twice the Appeal in this spot. Finally, Bob Baffert, on his way back from Euroears gallant try in Dubai Saturday and still basking in The Factor's star turn at Oaklawn, shows up with a seemingly live Sinai for Ahmed Zayat.

Best Value: #7 Sinai 6-1
Next Best: #8 Nacho Saint 7-2
Exotics Use: #11 Astrology 5-2
Super Add: #6 Supreme Ruler 20-1
Hi-5 Play: #1 Ruler On Ice 8-1
