Default Alarmist Stories Misportray Social Security Disability Insurance

Alarmist Stories Misportray Social Security Disability Insurance
August 23, 2011 at 11:20 am

Quote:
Social Security’s disability-insurance program is forecast to run short of money in 2018, more than six years from now, and policymakers can plug the hole for several decades by reallocating some taxes from the related old-age program as they have done in the past. But that’s not the impression you’d get from some alarmist reports. “Social Security disability on verge of insolvency” blares a Fox News story, a theme echoed by other outlets (see here and here).

.... [detailed story with data]

that's more than six years from now.

oh, then why worry? that's so far off into the future. and absolutely just move money from somewhere else. why, old-age programs don't need money. by all means, rob peter to pay paul. it always works well.

i read that new apps for ssdi are up 50% above the norm, with the economy and joblessness what it is.

yeah, i am figuring if someone told you that you had six years left in this world, you might think that wasn't much time at all.
thing is, the constant response from d.c. is that there's no need to move on things, that there's plenty of time for a fix. but the longer we wait, the harsher that fix becomes. pay now, or pay later...but either way, you have to pay. procrastination solves nothing. neither does ignoring...but hey, if you leave it for the next guy, you avoid contention, angering voters, getting that re election...and after all, that is what is most important, right?

The Republicans need their election talking points, and they realize that "kill Obamacare" can't fly again, as too many Americans are already benefiting from it.

Thus, although the GOP backed off on embracing the radioactive and election-killing Paul Ryan budget plan failure, they are proceeding with self-destruction by telling grandma they are not going to keep their government hands off her Medicare and Social Security.

The Republican party is very strange nowadays. They are campaigning upon removing the social safety nets of our society, while that society is down and out. And 1/5 of Americans are embracing their own destruction. Very strange, indeed.

Oh, I can't listen to Ed Schultz or Olbermann, either. But at least they are not filled with the obvious racism and hate of Limbaugh and Beck. The GOP runs rings around the Democrats when it comes to messaging, and teaching the base to respond as desired. Always have.

The prefect example is right now, when the GOP are getting their elderly base to actually support giving up their Medicare and Social Security to privateers. Unbelievable.

Obvious racism? You are delusional! Limbaugh is mostly satirical in his show
and It pains me that people write him off with their diatribes. I like Beck, but dont really sit down and watch his show. I dont know where he's going
with some of his stuff, but if you dont think there is some truth in his theories, you havent really been paying attention at all
