i don't remember ever seeing anyone ask or explain-and maybe i'm just a weirdo for wondering..

why are conformation photos always of a horse facing left?

They tend to face that way in the winner's circle too. Might have something to do with it. Could it have anything to do with the way the mane typically falls? It's my understanding that for English riding the mane goes to the right. Tradition might've carried over.

i don't know if it's due to the mane, or if it's just because that side is the near side, therefore they always show that, rather than the far side.

Here are the ROI's for 2011 freshman stallions ... by now their first offspring to start have been racing for almost a full year.

Only two stallions have had a positive ROI both years. One is Latent Heat and the other is Attila's Storm.

Attila's Storm was the leader after the opening quarter mile in both the '05 and '06 Breeders Cup Sprint. He finished 4th one year and 5th the other. McAnalley and Schosberg trained him. No grand stud plans for him ... he stood for $1,500 in the slots-rich state of New Mexico. His offspring have killed them there -- winning at 25% with numerous blockbuster longshot wins.

Latent Heat has actually had a few more 2nd place finishes than wins -- despite the profitable ROI's.

Any Given Saturday:

2011: 83-8-11-14 ($0.92 ROI)
2012: No debut winner, so no data

Attila's Storm:

2011: 30-8-3-4 ($7.05 ROI)
2012: 18-4-5-1 ($3.53 ROI)

Corinthian:

2012: 96-21-15-9 ($1.88 ROI)
