DQ's in Major Races
I was watching HRTV last week, and they were talking about the '98 Belmont. I was just getting into racing at that time, so I never realized until they were showing the head on just how much Real Quiet came out on Victory Gallop in the stretch. The topic was whether or not Real Quiet would have been dq'd had he actually won the photo. They even called one of the stewards who was working that day, and he would never actually say what they would have done if he had won. He just stated that they had gotten lucky the photo went the way it did.
I'm sure it has happened, but can anyone think of any major races where the winner was dq'd for interference? I remember watching the Breeder's Cup Mile last year and seeing Goldikova cut someone off, but nothing was done. As I recall that horse finished well back in the field, so it may not have mattered anyway. Do the stewards seem to be more forgiving on major race days like that? |

two of the biggest are probably secretariat getting taken down in the champagne, and affirmeds dq in the travers.
and i have always been of the opinion that they wouldn't have dq'd real quiet had he managed to finish in front.

The Black Eyed Susan back in 2006 resulted in a DQ, and a questionable one at that.
Didn't Rock Hard Ten get DQ'd in his Santa Anita Derby?

Rock Hard Ten finished 2nd and was Dq'd to third. Also, Fran's Valentine was DQ'd from a win in the first BC Juvenile Fillies and left unplaced.

Gate Dancer was taken down from second in the first BCC, when it was Wild Again that should have been, if anyone at all was to blame.

Gate Dancer was DQ'd from second in the inaugural BC Classic.
Affirmed's disqualification in the '78 Travers was the second DQ in a row in that race, as Run Dusty Run was taken down from first in the '77 Travers. A few others that I recall were Sky Beauty being DQ'd in the 1992 Spinaway, and The Wicked North in the '94 Big 'Cap. |

Equipoise was DQ'd from wins three different times in his career -- including once in the Met Mile...and he ran during a time when you could get away with a lot of stuff.
