Default Point of Entry

I hadn't realize he was sold but was shocked he is going to stand at Adena vs. Three Chimney or Claiborne. With Dynaformer out of the loop I figured 3 Chimney would take a shot or Claiborne. I guess Stronach really wanted him?

Is it me or is this math a bit off? "He bought 50 percent of him for racing and he'll take 100 percent of him for breeding and let the Phipps retain a small piece," Hall of Fame horseman Shug McGaughey confirmed Jan. 18.

Maybe he means he will let the Phipps have a few free covers a year to him.

He's an excellent turf horse, but the best mares he gets bred to at stud will probably wind up being the Phipps freebies in the first few years.

The Phipps outfit of 2013 is not the same as 20 years ago and certainly very different from 40 years ago. Ogden Mills Phipps ("Dinny") has had health issues and I believe that only one of his daughters is actively involved in racing. I have not seen his son at the races since he was college aged or thereabouts. One of the daughters married Bill Farish (talk about pedigree!) and over the last few years Shug has taken some Lane's End horses and the Phipps' started using more of their stallions and not using Claiborne so exclusively.
It is certainly a changing of the guard as the close relationship between Claiborne and Phipps outfits go back to the 1930's.
