Mike, I am begging for no more polytrack posts....You've made your point, and the proponents have made theirs. People can happily make up their own minds at this time.

no one ever said the word 'eliminates' which is vastly different in definition than 'prevention'...the word used when discussing polytrack and breakdown.

The new cushion-track at Hollywood is amazing. It is much kinder on the horses. You can never get trainers to agree on anything but the rave reviews are unanimous about this track so far. I have not heard one bad thing about the surface. That is incredible if you realize how hard it is to please everyone. Every trainer that I've talked to says that many of their horses that were sore started travelling much better almost immediately. It will be interesting to see if everyone is just as happy once we start racing on it. I am pretty sure that there will be some horses that won't like it. Then we might start to hear some complaining. I don't like the idea of having all polytracks out here because if you have a horse that doesn't like, then you are screwed. You have to ship somewhere esle. Anyway, there are plenty of good tracks throughout the country that have good surfaces and I don't think that they need polytrack. I don't know if they necessarily needed it in California. We definitely needed some kind of new track because the surfaces out here were pretty bad. I would have rather if they could have put in a new dirt track that was safe. But if my choice was either polytrack or what we had, I would take the polytrack. It's just been too hard to keep horses sound out here the last few years. |

Poly seemed to reduce the number of serious, life-threatening injuries at TP last winter. The chip probably always had been there and just migrated a bit to get into a more problematic position. She may not be able to race again on the same level, but her life is not in danger, which is the point of polytrack.

Rather her injury presented itself on poly than ending her life on the dirt.

Yeah u want to cut down on the Turfway breakdowns? Then have some decent horse flesh show up with some respectfull trainers and owners who don't run their stock into submission then they'll last a whole lot longer. 5K claimers already running with problems. I know we'll run them 20 to 30 times a year and run them into shape.

The general public simply has no idea how many horses are being catastophically injured on poly. Turfway, didnt give an accurate number. However, Woodbine has had 3 horses breakdown fatally over their new surface during training hours. These tracks arent going to give accurate figures, it would make them look foolish.
If a horse cannot get over a good conventional dirt surface soundly, they shouldnt be running, period. The breeding is what needs to change, not the racing surfaces. Last edited by The Bid : 10-09-2006 at 06:24 PM. |

Bid,i doubt your excuses for poorly maintained surfaces will fly any more. the breeding will not change until the market demands that. insofar as Woodbine, you'll need to prove 3 horses have broken down due to poly.

This surface is one of the best orchestrated marketing con jobs ever attempted to be perpetuated on the racing public. And mark my words, it may take a while, but at some point that will be exposed.

Shame too, Noble Stella was in really great shape and had won the Glens Falls handicap very nicely up here. Game mare who tried hard.
