Default Herpes Outbreak at Monmouth
Joe Orseno tonight on ATRAB at 5pm to detail situation, but it appears that Monmouth Park is under quarantine with an outbreak of Equine Herpes. Speculation is that horses arriving from Adena Springs' Canadian operation initiated the situation that has the gates closed to horses coming or going at Oceanport...

Damn, that sucks Steve...

That stuff can survive for over two weeks in the environment too.

Vaccinations help with this too... hopefully, most have been vaccinated.

I think Pimlico was under quarantine for EHV earlier this year, too...

actually it's trickier than that...EVH1 can remain in a latent (dormant) state in a carrier horse for a indefinite amount of time...only to be triggered by some stress or other illness...it's estimated that the virus may be present in 50% of adult horses...but the question of where and when it might become active is not easily answered.

Yeah, I know that... we had a few cases at my old barn. The fact that it survives in the environment alone for over two weeks is what gets me. That would mean that Monmouth would be quarantined for at least that long, correct?

I think SOP is that they wait for 30 days after the LAST horse registers a fever or other symptoms...but I could be wrong there.

I will text message my friend who is working there as a groom. I hope her horses are OK. It is scary to think about.

EHV is very bad stuff. Isolation and vaccination are required.
For those that don't know about its various forms and consequences, here's a link that is informative.

No, it's definitely not, DTS...

With that said, our horses were vaccinated probably 3 times a year against EHV, but that doesn't guarantee immunity against it...

That's a good way to try to protect them. I'm not a virologist but it seems to me that EHV mutates like the flu.
Read that article. It talks about EHV-1 and 4.
Many people don't realize all the problems that horses are vulnerable to.
West Nile, coggins, worms...geesh, the list is endless.
