And "Who let the dogs out" . . . a wager not needed?
So Patty and I watched the final for the Westminster Dog Show last might and I picked the best in show out of the top breeds right off the bat. Not a biggy I guess since the Wire Fox Terrier has won it more than any other breed, so his odds were probably 2-1 or 3-1. A $100 wager would have been nice.
Now if I could only look at the horses and do the same thing I could retire in style. Maybe it was a lucky guess but I nailed it. Patty and I love horses but dogs are our most loved and most special. We tried to remember how many dogs we've had over our 52 years of marriage and settled on 8 and adding our dogs before we ever met add 4 more. Mostly rescue dogs or cast offs from families that thought they wanted them. One pure bred only, a Lhasa Apso, but he was one of the cast offs. There's something very special about having a dog by you side, one that loves you no holds bard. Anyway, we now have a blonde 12 pound toy poodle, that had major hip surgery (got ran over by kids bike) when we got him for "Dallas Pets Alive" (great organization). He's also deaf and partially blind but has become a integral part of our family after about a year of having him. He's Patty's dog but I picked him out for her. He gets extra attention and we've taught him to respond with hand gestures. We also have a portuguese water dog, who is my dog, maybe 60 pounds, black wavy coat with white marking on face and chest, white socks on her front legs and paws . . . smarter than a whip and will stop on a dime when we are walking with no leash on my command. Not sure why, but she does not like our pool, thus those big webbed feet are just used for extra width when walking and playing. She was rescued from living in a kennel for way too long at our previous vets after being given up by another family. Bro, the poodle is about 13 and Sophie is, I'm guessing, 3 or 4. Best watchdog we've ever had. And when she runs by me on our walks she sounds like a horse breathing in and out (much softer of course). Already thinking about what we'd both do without them. Love'em, love'em love'em!!! Ok, enough about dogs . . . need to check and see if the Fairgrounds PP's are up yet.

Well, we have something in common Don. I too am a dog fancier or you might appropriately say I have “gone to the dogs.” My wife died about a year and half ago so now it is just me and the dogs and they are a female chocolate lab and a male lab mix and a tiny four pound, female Yorkshire terrier. I am glad to have them and really I think people that don’t like dogs can’t be trusted, although I admit that they can try your patience at times like when they, with their hearing that is three times as great as a human’s or with their sense of smell that is three hundred times as great, sense other neighborhood dogs near my house and yard and they try to demolish the back door so they can get out to bark at the invaders. They also are pretty expensive. Seems like every trip to the vet can cost 2 or 3 hundred dollars or more these days and in addition to these things, they can tie a person down. Fortunately for me, I can get my wife’s sister to come and keep mine, but if I didn’t have her to help me, I imagine my travels would be pretty limited. You hear such horror stories, I wouldn’t dare put my dogs in a kennel.
I did not voluntarily acquire any of these dogs. My daughter is an obstetrician in Little Rock. She keeps getting dogs, but then she is a very busy working woman and single mother to three children so she really doesn’t have time to take care of a dog and they usually end up at my house which is ok, I love them and am glad to have them. She has another dog now and I will be very surprised, if I don’t have a fourth dog very soon. This one is another female lab and a highly bred one that cost her $3,000. Half of the cost of this one came from my eldest grandson. He is an avid duck hunter and wanted the dog and talked his mother into getting it by saying he would pay half the cost. I’m sure she thought he would never be able to come up with the money, but she got fooled. I will be very surprised, if this dog ever sees the duck woods. This one, if she comes to live with me, will be a real challenge. She is the female Marley, if you’ve ever seen that movie.

Not to move your thread off of its topic, but with the proliferation of sports wagering the time may not be too far off when you will in fact be able to place a legal online wager on the winner of the Westminster Dog Show.
There have to be at least a dozen gaming organizations (used to be called bookies), ranging from the Native American Casino operators to the State Lottery to the firm that operates the OTB in this state to a number of national betting firms who have hired registered lobbyists to advance their arguments as sports betting becomes a hot topic on this year's legislative calendar.

I watched the agility test last weekend and that is pure fun to see how well trained those dogs of all breed are and fast. It's a sport like horse racing and the thoroughbred business altogether that only a small percentage of people know about or care about. HMMMM, does that make us elitists? HAR DE HAR HAR!!! In my besT Jackie Gleason voice.
