Final 2021 ROI Results
The Breeders Cup is over and so is our 2021 year. Next week we start anew. The Colorado Kitten, Ruffian is our overall ROI winner for the year. Ruffian finished the year collecting $6700+ with a profit of $1344 and a positive ROI of 25%. This is Ruff's second ROI win joining Little Watermelon and Real Quiet as repeaters in the 13 years I've been keeping track. 2020 was the only year we didn't have at least one positive returner. Plenilune takes second place with a return of 16.85% with Roamin 3rd at 10.56% and Indian Hemp 4th at 6.81%.
Ruffian won the weekly contest 8 times with Real Quiet adding 7 and Plenilune 6. Everybody won at least once. Digger hit the board 41% of the time with 18 on the board finishes. The biggest score was on Sept. 25th when Ruffian had a profit of $2092 on what I think was a $20 win bet. That payout did not even make the top 5 but more on that later. Eleven players played the vast majority of weeks and that's what keeps us going. 5 players showed up all 50 weeks. Congrats to our ROI Champion Ruffian on finding those hidden gems and thanks to all our players and to Steve Byk for providing us a place to have some fun and sharpen our skills. See you on the 20th.

Kudos to Ruffian and to all. It was great fun. Looking forward to the coming year. I'm sure it will be as entertaining as ever and maybe some of us cellar dwellers can up our game. There is always hope! Welcome to the new players.

At least 13 years are in the books. Seems like a long time, 697 weeks but we are still going strong. As I've always said it's hard to show a profit playing every Saturday at different tracks forming tickets on horses you may or may not have a strong opinion on. We have had 24 players that have played over 100 weeks. There have been 25 more that have played. I have always liked to give credit to the one player who has shown a profit over 263 of those weeks and that's Digger who is still # 1 in ROI with a $316 cushion and a positive ROI of 1.13%. Nicely played Digger. With her ROI win in 2021 Ruffian jumped 4 places and now stands third on the list with only Digger and Husker Princess ahead of her. Dance Smartly and Real Quiet round out the top 5. I still lead with 74 wins to Ruffians 69 but that's mainly due to the fact I've been lucky not to have missed a week. Joly B would be right there with me if not for a hurricane and a blizzard. The real overall win leader should be Ruffian. She wins at an 11.64% clip. My percentage is 10.62% and the only other player to crack 10% was Criminal Type at 10.32%. Plenilune with a good year passed Joly B to land in 3rd with 51 wins to Joly's 50. NJ Stinks lands the 5th spot with 43 wins. Hate to say it, but Joly B continues to dominate the Jacques Who award by finishing second 74 times. JB's nose is always near the wire. So far we have sent $885,070 through our virtual teller and got back $687,000 a loss of 22%. In 2021 we lost 15% so all and all it was a "bettor" year than usual. That's all the info for now that you never wanted to know but in my defense there were no races to handicap on our yearly vacation.

Real Quiet, I continue to be impressed with your data base and amazed with your ability to draw upon such a vast amount of information. All in all, it demonstrates what a difficult game we are trying to play, where in a good year we are barely able to beat the takeout and overall can't even do that. That should send a sobering message to anyone who thinks that he can "beat" the races on a long term and consistent basis. I do think that you have a better chance by playing tracks with which you are familiar and only on races where you have a very good insight.
In reflecting on my ROI play this past year, I believe that I burned through a large amount of ROI$ on attempts to hit pick 4's, 5's and 6's with very little to show for it. [I'll pass over any comment on NYRA's Grand Slam, which I play just because I keep hoping that someday I can make it come out right]. Other times exotic plays were successful, but in my effort to make sure I "had it", I spread the bet so broadly that the return was less than the win price on my key horse. Perhaps the take out on those exotics is so high to take most of the profit out of the payoff. But, I keep insisting that by trying different wagers in the ROI we learn important lessons that help us at the betting windows. |

On September 25th at PARX Ruffian won the contest by putting $20 on Hollywood Talent to win and the $219.20 win mutuel for each 2 bucks returned to her $2192 and a profit of $2092. Don Guido posted "It may be the biggest ROI this forum has ever had. Real Quiet should know." The short answer is "not even close". Now for the long answer. On 6/6/15 yours truly had an exacta for $20 which paid $374.50 for each 2 bucks for a total return of $3745 and a profit of $3545. That was a Belmont Day. Roamin comes in at # 2. On 6/8/19 Tom had an exacta and a win bet featuring Sir Winston and his profit on the day was $3320. That was a Belmont Day. Little Watermelon comes in 3rd with a profit of $2900 on 9/14/13 with a $100 win bet on a $60 winner. The 4th and 5th spots belong to Roamin in 2009 and 2014. In 2009 Tom played Furthest Land in the BC Dirt Mile and got back a profit of $2490. It was one of the few times Tom hit a place bet of $50. On 8/30/14 Tom showed a profit of $2475 with a $100 win bet on a $51.50 horse. 6 thru 10 belong to Digger, Ruffian (this year), Joly B, Dance Smartly and Whykickamoocow (one of the best names ever). And for my last fact that we chase every year. In 2019 Roamin banked $8912. He is the only player to break $7000. I'm done. Time to get ready for another season so good luck to all and to all a good ride.
