Default Saturday April 20 Oaklawn Park Points Picks go here

This Saturday we will be playing Races 3 through 12 at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a card that includes the Oaklawn Handicap, the Bath House Row Stakes* and the Valley of the Vapors Stakes**.

Please have your selections for the points contest posted on this thread not later than 1:10 PM Central time, the scheduled post time for race 3.

Good luck to all and thank you to Digger for scoring.

N.B. - I've always been intrigued by the names given to some stakes races and wonder about their derivation. For those of you who might be interested (sorry, Cal, you probably hear this stuff every day):

* Bath House Row is a National Historic Landmark District and a major part of the Hot Springs National Park. Hot Springs became famous as a spa in the 19th century as many came to seek treatment in its therapeutic waters. A central water system was created to collect and distribute the thermal waters to a number of elegant bathhouses built along a grand promenade.

**The Valley of the Vapors emits steam from the natural hot springs around which the city grew. The water bubbles up from these springs at an average temp of 143 degrees farenheit and is piped to Bath House Row. It is also the site of an independent music festival that takes place every March.

Can't say I hear it every day, but I am familiar with everything you said Joly. Hard not to be if you live in a place for about 50 years. I do take an occasional bath, but have never taken one of those offered on Bathhouse Row in downtown Hot Springs. Actually, like most people I think that live in a place with a goodly bit of tourism, I tend to avoid downtown Hot Springs altogether. Most of the places I need to go are South of downtown and South of Oaklawn.

This is an interesting place and I know a smattering of its history and I think some books have been written about it. I know that in the 1890s there was a gunfight between the Sheriff of Garland County and the Hot Springs Chief of Police. Don't know who won or what it was about. Also, know that gangsters and celebrities used to frequently come for the baths. Also know that there was illegal casino gambling here until Winthrop Rockefeller came to Arkansas and became the Governor and promptly shut all that down. Oaklawn survived all that since they have been a legal gambling establishment since the early 1900s.
