The owner had a wild idea of a match race with American Pharoah.

I think that would be a great idea. It would give AP a good prep without shipping and Beholder too. You could run it on network TV on Sunday after the 2nd football game and before the night game.

They used to have them all the time until after Ruffian.

Why not ?

I know Dick Mandella is not keen on shipping Beholder more than
he has to and AP has been shipped a lot. Run that race at SA in the
middle of Sept and then they are set for the BC. It wont be graded,
but neither of those horses need anything on their resume.

I like the idea. What are the ramifications ? AP beats Beholder, well He's a Triple Crown winner. Beholder beats AP, well she's very special (Which she is already). No negative for either. I think people come out saying these are two special horses.

AP belongs at Saratoga. He has nothing to gain by match racing a 6yr old mare.

Very true! After winning the triple crown everything else is kind of "meh". I think Beholder should go where AP runs, not the other way around.She cant go to the Travers but Honor Code, AP and Beholder in the Classic would be very exciting indeed.

Beholder's running style isn't conducive to a match race with a horse like American Pharoah. The mere suggestion is as silly as when people rumbled for a Zenyatta/Rachel Alexandra match race. One horse would need to completely change their running style. No sense in it. Let them meet in a real race with normal conditions and we will see who's better.

a beautiful picture of Mandella giving Beholder a peppermint.

Last year as a 2yo he ran faster than she did on the same card, in the very next race after hers.

American Pharoah left his rivals during the fourth quarter of the race, when he threw a 23.93-second split at them with Espinoza doing no more than just waving the stick in front of American Pharoah’s right eye. He continued powerfully to the finish to complete 1 1/16 miles on the fast main track in 1:41.95, earning a gaudy Beyer Speed Figure of 101.

The final time compared well with the other 1 1/16-mile, Grade 1 stakes on the card. One race earlier, two-time Breeders’ Cup winner Beholder was timed in 1:42.19 for her victory in the Zenyatta Stakes.

pretty much every match race ever is won by who wins the break.

Hopefully they both go in the bcc

Beholder ran unreal yesterday. Mandella is master and had her cranked for effort I am not sure he pulls it off again BUT it would be great. That was NOT the Whitney yesterday that was The Pac Classic and NONE of those would have been less then 10/1 in Whitney save the mare. Take NOTHING away from a superior mare yet we need to have objective respectful take on the caliber of that field.

A match race is one of the worst races to set up and will prove nothing.
