![]() Espinoza has fracture in C-3, out indefinitely, had "stinger" in left arm
following accident in which Bobby Abu Dhabi perished Jockey Victor Espinoza suffered a fracture to the C-3 vertebrae and will be sidelined indefinitely, his agent, Brian Beach, reported Sunday. Espinoza also had some numbness in his left arm, but it is subsiding. Beach described that arm injury as similar to a "stinger" suffered by football players. Espinoza was injured during an accident on Sunday morning at Del Mar in which the stakes-winning sprinter Bobby Abu Dhabi perished ![]() Espinoza was working Bobby Abu Dhabi when the horse dropped suddenly and without warning nearing the end of a drill, apparently from a sudden cardiac event. ![]() Espinoza was placed on a backboard and had his neck immobilized by paramedics. He was transferred to a waiting ambulance and was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital. She Espinoza will be kept there overnight, Beach said Sunday. Espinoza can move all four extremities. He has no paralysis, Beach said. But Beach said Espinoza "got lucky" that he wasn't more seriously injured. Bobby Abu Dhabi, 4, was third in the Grade 2 True North Stakes at Belmont Park in his last start on June 8. He won the Grade 2 Kona Gold earlier this year at Santa Anita and also was second in the Grade 1 Triple Bend. He was trained by Peter Miller. |

![]() Grateful that Espinoza is going to be ok. But wow, so heartbreaking to lose Bobby Abu Dhabi. This sport is high and low and one must be tough to follow it, for sure. RIP Bobby Abu Dhabi.

![]() Just a coincidence, but my only nephew, Corey, managed to wreck his ATV in Va Friday. Just about the same result. He's coming down to Tampa for surgery. He has numbness in his arms and shoulders, fractured one vertebrae in his neck, but repairable.
Can't say the same for the ATV. It's gone to the scrap metal heap in the sky. |

![]() Talked to brother, Corey has something similar to Espinoza. He will stay in Va to let swelling go down, then come to Tampa in case surgery is needed. Tampa General is one of the top hospitals in the country. I know their neuro team well. He'll be well taken care of.

![]() I wish Corey a speedy recovery too, ElPrado.
I always liked Victor Espinoza - more than Bob Baffert used to - that's for sure. |

![]() Injured jockey Victor Espinoza is making progress at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, according to his agent, Brian Beach.
Beach said July 25 the rider will be hospitalized at least until July 26 following the fracture of his C3 vertebra during a fall July 22 at Del Mar, while he was working grade 2 winner Bobby Abu Dhabi, who died from an apparent cardiac event. The fracture in Espinoza's neck will be treated with a brace he'll have to wear for six weeks, but the reason for his extended hospitalization has been nerve sensitivity in his left shoulder and arm. That sensitivity, however, has diminished over the last 24 hours, Beach said. "He's feeling much better," the agent said. "He was having quite a bit of sensitivity to nerves in his arm and shoulder. They still hadn't wiped the racetrack off of him until yesterday, because he was so sensitive to the touch. But now that that's going down, he's been able to do more things with his arms. Victor Espinoza is recovering from injuries suffered in a July 22 fall at Del Mar "There was no pain unless someone touched his arm, and then it would light up." Beach said Espinoza is in good spirits and was visited by trainer Bob Baffert and his wife, Jill Baffert, Tuesday. Espinoza has also been walking around and doing some physical therapy, Beach said. "He was smiling and joking around today," Beach said. "He's happy to see feeling coming back to his arms |
